Ok let's see. AMD 2600XP CPU in an Asus A7N8X mobo. Was playing UT2k4, Asus probe was blipping at me. Apparently my CPU was at 73C. The mobo is always at 40C give or take a couple Cs either way. Got a hot as hell Asus 9800XT as well. I have two fans on the back of the case and one of those PCI sized fans underniegth the vid card. The CPU fan is the one that came with the AMD cpu and is still working. Recently I took the side panel off because the vid card was heating it up so badly it was way too hot to the touch.

Right now I am using the natural system aka open the window and have the fricken cold air come in, that helps but I'd rather not freeze myself. A non OCed 2600 shouldn't be that hot normally should it??

Hmm..maybe your heatsink is not making proper contact? I know my mobo runs at 40C give or take a little and thats pretty warm, but as long as its stable then you shouldnt really worry

It is really hot make sure you are not getting wrong temperature readings. Is you case is roomier i mean full tower or small.

I would definitely take the heatsink off the processor and clean the thermal goop off of both the processor and heatsink. Then get a quality silver thermal paste and put a small small amount on the top of the chip and bottom of heatsink. Then reseat the heatsink carefully to make sure that you are getting solid contact and heat transferrence. It definitely sounds to me like the heatsink is not making solid contact and if that is the case, you will cause damage by not trying to fix it.

with two rears and a slot fan? theres no way its the case then unless you'd caulked all the intakes up. sounds like the heatsink isn't on right or the paste squeezed out or something weird is going on. take it off and reapply with paste. use razor blade for even thin coat.

yeah i was about to say the heat sink too, i also heard that if the thermal paste leaks out the sides (from applying too much) that it can cause conduction and short some things, be carful of that too

i also have a question for you all, for a stock heat sink and fan no OCing would you recomend that i go with the thermal pad that is included with the heat sink or go with the paste?

i also have 7 80mm case fans

Hmm I don't remember if I put the cpu/HS in this board or if I got it already done from the store. I know I've never used any goop in previous cpu installations. Besides not using very much at all and trying to spread it out, I'm not knowing of much else (sorry I didn't read the replies yet, I will have to later)

If I was to do this with my cpu/hs...well...scared of killing it somehow. That and I never took off a HS. I know putting them on is a major bitch.

Ooooo... you're new at this right?

Ok, taking the HSF on and off is very simply. It's only hard because you have to put considerable pressure down on the latch to get it off, and if you've got butterfingers, I guess there's a chance of the flathead sliding off the latch and impaling the motherboard. Just take a flathead, slip in onto the little slot in the latch, press down hard, and while doing so, lever the flathead so that it unlatches the, well, latch. Then check and see if everything was installed right. Check to see if there is a clear imprint of your processor on the HSF's thermal compound. You might want to take off the stock compound and reapply with your own stuff.
