thanx for reading/helping

cpu
2.1 ghz amd
512ram
2 HDs - 160g, 60g
geforce 6600
windows xp pro

On friday, i clicked on an instant message with a link to a virus. i clicked cancel when it ask to save/open file but it was too late and the virus has came through my temp internet folder. Norton detected it but failed to quarentine it.

i emptied my temp internet folder. i tried scanning my computer for the virus wiht norton. computer shuts down b4 it is complete.

now whenever i turn on my computer, the temperature rises quickly or whenever it hits 92C, it will shut down automatically. this usually occurs after around 7-10 mins. I lowered the processor speed to 1ghz and it runs cooler on 80-82C. It usually last a little longer around 30-40 mins before shutting down. i ran norton again and it did not detect any virus. i reinstalled windows xp and the problem repeats.

i read online there's a virus that slows down your cpu fan speed.
i do not know the standard for cpu fan speed so i can not compare.

All this started happenign after i got the virus.

Please Help.

Thank you

1) do not run your IM proggie under an Administrator-class account anymore

2) look at the fourth photo on this page, yours like that? If so, there's your problem. Photo #3 shows the right way.

As mech pointed out, there is no way a virus can make your system overheat. They almost have to be totally unrelated problems.

There's no way I know of for a virus to slow down your CPU fan. If the fan is spinning fast enough to smart a bit when you stop it with your finger, it's fine.

As mech suggests, make sure the HSF is properly seating on the CPU.

Are you certain there's a pad or heatsink compound on the core? I ask only because occasionally someone here posts a message thinking they don't need it. Was it applied properly? If using Artic Silver it should be a thin, even layer.

If you're certain the HSF is flush on the CPU and the heat sink compound is applied properly, you might want to confirm that it's actually running as hot as it says. Maybe a sensor is bad (I'm reaching here). 92C is 194F. You should SMELL it if it's that hot. You also will not be able to touch the HSF without burning your fingers.

Interesting.

I'd unhook my HDDs and power up. Can't load a virus that way. Just go into BIOS, maybe PC Health and see the temp. If it overheats with the HDDs disconnected, it ain't a virus d/l'd to them, it's a HW thingy (and a weird coincidence)
