CPU slowdowns...

I realize that the P4 has built in thermal protection on it via throttling (I think). My question is when the protection kicks in. My CPU load temps max at around 65-66 degrees Celcius on my P4. My new HSF (Volcano 7+) is on the way, but I'm wondering if it will help my performance any. When running 3dmark 2001 during the tests towards the end, the frames "studder" about once every second. This never happened on my Athlon system (1.33 Thunderbird).

My system details:
Epox 4G4A+
P4 1.8A @ 2.6 (Vcore 1.675)
Retail HSF
512 MB C2 Corsair XMS 2700
Radeon 8500 OC'd at 290/290

Any advice you guys have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Thought I'd mention that other than the visual slowdown in 3dmark it is completely stable (Prime 95 for 12 hours).

Was the radeon in your athlon system oc'd to 290/290??? Are you using radtweak?? I think it may be more related to vid card or vid card drivers then actual system....

Run sandra cpu burn for several loops...it will heat it way up...then watch to see if the scores star to get lower....

I don't think prime will error out in throttling...cpu will likely get the rounding correct just take longer to do it...

driver problem...you might want to reinstall your video driver, intel application accelerator driver, intel inf driver...etc...
I had that problem before and it's now fixed when i uninstall and reinstalled to WHQL driver...i think it was cause by one of the intel driver...I just couldn't figure out which one...

Same video card on my athlon system OC'd to the same speed (using PowerStrip). However like an idiot I hadn't installed any of my board drivers off the cd it came with yet so I did that, however do to other circumstances I had to reformat before I could try again. So I will try again later tomorrow with the appropriate drivers loaded.

i think the throttling is between 70-80c
u can also try to lower ur cpu and see if it stops studdering.

Well, installed the Intel Application Accelerator and it improved my score, but the studdering is still there. I've ruled out throttling because my temps now max out at around 60 degrees. I've tried running the card at default speeds only to have it do the same thing...only slower. Upon further investigation it seems that this is a common problem with the Radeon 8500 in general and has everything to do with software, not hardware. I thought ATI had their drivers issues fixed now (owned a flawless Radeon 64MB VIVO before this card) but apparently they don't. I guess it's time for to get rid of the Radeon on fleabay and get a Ti4200 or something like it. *Grumble Grumble* Oh well, if anyone has any info about this problem please PM me, but since this is now a video related issue, it doesn't belong in this forum.

Thanks.

I agree...My radeon 8500 as been a pain in the ass when it comes to working drivers...

I am not a big gamer so radeon 9700 doesn't impress me much...I hope it will drive prices down on the 4200ti as well....I like the nview feature of nvidia better then the still sucky looking tv-out quality of ati....

i am not sure what causes the studdering...
but you have to completely uninstall the intel drivers (shut down also) before you reinstall it...not beta version either...all you need is in the top thread "benchmarks bio/drivers" thread...

I thought it kicked in around 60-70........because isn't 74 or so the actual melting temp for the P4's?

I don't really know what the actual melting temp for a P4 is ...... I really don't want to get that far. Thease things get kind of pricy...Know what I mean...So get an ALPHA an pretty good Fan and depending on your likes, get one with good cfm with out getting too loud.... As for your video..Everyone is right, Its your drivers. Delete and re-install. I did. I also did this........I have a MSI GeForce 4 Ti4600 on this rig and I installed their drivers. Found out something......Msi has a cool clock frequency added but as I found out, something was missing...... I deleted the driver and installed only the latest nVida driver and added "coolbits" to it. This is what it added....... The virt sink located in the "more 3D" tab was added and by diabling it and the other in the "open GL Settings". The virt sink enabled was giving me the max Framerate of my MONITOR which is at 75Hz (In certain games like DiabloII). When I disabled the virtsinks, my framerates are what my vid card can handle, thus making better scores. I don't kbnow what ATI has for you but I hope this helps out what you can be looking for. 3DMark Check it out PCMark Docs Operations
