CPU Temp is not the same in Windows and BIOS

I've just bought a P4-1.8A and OC'ed it to the max of the motherboard 2400Mhz and 533Mhz FSB (Rambus).

The strange thing is that my Asus Probe program says that my CPU is runing from 50-57C (and 69C when playing Unreal Tournament for 2 hours non-stop) in Windows, but when I restart and go to the BIOS and watch the tempeture there it says 35C. From the time I view the temp in Windows till I'm in the BIOS it takes about 10 seconds.

I can't believe that the tempeture can drop so much in just 10 sec. Which number should I believe ?

The heatsink doesn't seem too hot either.

asus probe doesn't work very well. try using motherboard monitor 5.

WIndows temps are that, windows temps, typically taken with a known CPU load. Bios temps are with an unknown load level.

Even with MBM, you're gonna probably see a significant (maybe 10-20C) difference between BIOS temps and Unreal Tournament/REboot windows temps.

The reason? WIndows is loaded, BIOS is probably somewhere in the middle. Plus, internal diode's that work properly react very quickly to temp changes. It doesn't typically take more than a 5-10Seconds to go from idle to load temp.

I'll vouch for that, Blackie (see rig link in sig) takes less than 10 seconds to go from 39C to 32C (full to idle)

Some versions of asus probe have this bug.
Download the latest version of asus probe and your bios and windoze temps should be the same.
I just dont like MBM5

Hmmm I'm using Asus Probe Version 2.14.08 and when my system is idle (almost) is says my CPU is running at 57C. If I run UT it says 69C. If I reboot and go to BIOS (when system is idle) it still says 35C.

Does Asus Probe have any issues running on Windows XP ? - Haven't tried looking at the values in Win2k yet, but I will very soon.

in that case you better stick with PCProbe

never fully trust temps and voltages from windows.
