I am interested in knowing how the winbond chip on a motherboard or the BIOS detects the heat of the CPU core for temperature monitoring? I assume that for the old Pentium 2, Pentium 3, and slot 1 Athlons the processor simply monitored its own temperature and then broadcast it on a signal to the BIOS, but if anyone knows how it works for sure that would be great. Then there is the socket 370 celeries, which are monitored by a thermistor mounted below the processor on the motherboard.
I would like to bring up a point regarding this: I have the Abit ZM6, and when it first came out it only supported a standard Celery, however when I bought it I downloaded a BIOS update that added support for the FC-PGA celery. That motherboard always lists my CPU temp as hovering around 128 F. I have been using my system for quite awhile now and I finally decided to buy a "heavy duty" HSF. That HSF didn't lower the reported temperature at all. That makes sense, considering the temperature is supposed to be monitored by the motherboard thermistor, but because of the FC-PGA redesign it can't detect the proper temperature anymore. So this brings up another question, do current FCPGA motherboards have a way around the problem I just described?
