I am running an AMD XP2800+ slightly overclocked to 2192MHz but have not changed the default voltage. I have an Antec Sonata II case with one case fan and an Arctic 2L heatsink/fan. The room temperature is a bit warm right now since it is 90+ degrees outside and the air conditioner hasn't been on long enough - 78 degrees F.
I think that the temperature probe for my CPU might be inaccurate. When I turn on my computer after it has been off for several hours and immediately go into the BIOS, the reported CPU temperature is 47 degrees C. After my computer has been on awhile and is idling, the temperature increases to about 52 degrees. Under 100% load, Prime95, it increases to about 59 degrees. Other temperatures seem more reasonable, in the 30-40 degree range. These are as reported by SpeedFan.
Should an XP2800+ be so hot when it is first booted up? The temperature only increases about 12 degrees from the initial to 100% load, so that seems good.
I was very careful to follow the instructions when I applied the Arctic Silver 5. I put a small dab onto the processor and used a credit card to create a thin smooth layer. I have done this several times using ArcticClean each time to clean the surface prior to putting new thermal compound on.
So what I am asking is, do you think that my CPU temperature readings are inaccurate? If not, should I be concerned about the readings that I am getting? I am not experiencing any problems with my system, but I don?t want to in the future either.
I have a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 motherboard in case it matters.
Thanks,
Ryan
