CPU Test failed

Yesterday morning, I went to turn on my pc, and it wouldnt boot. Instead, the monitor lit up in a ton of difernt glitchy colors. I powered off, then started it up again, and it booted fine.

This morning, I went to start pc and a voice through the speakers said "System Failed CPU Test". I then powered off, then started it again, and it booted normal. Whats going on here? Is my CPU fryed? I downloaded a large file the other day that took me 24 hours+ to get it (I am on 56k modem dialup).

Since then, I have also been getting that annoying Windows Start Navigation click sound whenever I click on anything. I turn it off, and when pc is rebooted, the sound returns. Ran spyware scans, and AVG and nothing came up. Please help, thanks.

Not necessarily. You may need to run some tests.

What do you mean by that?
I turn it off, and when pc is rebooted, the sound returns.
What sound?

The sound is the Windows Start Navigation. If you go to Control panel, sounds and audio devices, and Change sound scheme you will see it there. I did a restore point, and it got rid of that sound. But now, it is a waiting game to see if the boot problem will come back.

Yes, this computer did talk to me. It was a female voice and it said System Failed CPU Test...repetedly. I cant find any viruses, so I dunno.

I looked through the manual and didn't see any reference to talking error codes. I would think that would be a feature that they'd want to advertise, but maybe not. Was the file you downloaded of questionable content?

The file I downloaded lxskllr, was for the game Neverwinter Nights, and is called CEP V2. It is very popular, and thousands of people downloaded it. The source is from a polular site. But I downloaded this,

www.flydragonsoft.com/bmp-jpeg-converter.htm

which I think may have been the culprit. I should have know better than to download something that old. I uninstalled it though.

On the voice thing, I think Asus has that feature. Here is a link I researched. Other people had this similar problem.

I had a storm that hit, so I am wondering if maybe a spike did it. Even though I have a apc battery backup.

I guess the file downloads were just a coincidence. Even that .bmp converter doesn't look like it should cause problems. Maybe something got a little scrambled during the storm and it's now worked itself out. That's pretty unscientific, but hopefully you won't continue to have the boot problems.

Yeah I think they may have been too. The morning the power went out is when it started, so maybe it is fixed by the sytem restore. Time will tell I guess.

Voice diagnostic messages have been offered by motherboards for years now. Even P4P800 from ASUS had it.

What is your CPU temperature? How about your motherboard temperature?

To make sure your CPU is stable you can run Prime95 and monitor the temperatures.

This what I found on another forum....so I woul seriously rule out a virus!!
Asus k8v Deluxe
I connected up all the components and when I powered up the PC I get a blank screen and no beeps. I plugged in a speaker into the onboard sound and I get a message saying "System Failed CPU Test" over and over again.

I have tried resetting the CMOS by moving the jumpers and took and left the battery out for hours. Then put the battery back again and the CMOS jumpers.

Took the MB out of the case and only had the CPU, MEM, Heatsink/cooler and the graphic card plugged in but still get the same mesage.

I tried seating the memory stick on every bank and still the same problem. I finally reseated the CPU & Heatsink and still no luck.

Please help what am I doing wrong ? The only possibilities are that the MB or CPU or Memory is faulty or incompatible.

The bios revision says 1.12 does that mean its older than 1004 ?? I read in ASUS site that I need bios version greater than 1004 for the AMD 64 3000+. If so how can I update the bios when I cant even get the CPU up and running ? Please help me as I'm frustrated. Did any have the same problem ? how did you resolve it ?

Thanks
:bawl:

Also you might check your power supply.

Good Luck!

Here are my temps Navid:

CPU Temp 35/C 95/F
MB Temp 29C/ 84 F
CPU FAN 3609

These temps are with just my internet running, and Yahoo mesnger, nothing else. I will run prime later and see what happens.

The navigation sound is in windows. Using the browsers back button made the sound, and clicking on folders and such.

The talking sound would be in bios I guess. It had a black screen when it talked, and wasnt booted, so I guess that would be bios right?

I will take all that into consideration too Jedi. I neevr thought of it possibly being the power supply, it might be. Thanks everyone for helping me

Funny, someone who has a P4P800 (same as me) had the exact same problem and posted the other day on another board. His prob was pretty consistent, it never booted. Tried replacing everything, minimal boot, single stick of RAM in different slots, resetting CMOS, etc. When he heard the indicated message he tried to replace the CPU, still the same problem. Only thing left was MoBo, which he RMA'd. You might check for bad caps, though in his case there weren't any. Got lots of spare parts lying around?

Chasing for damage like this can be a very long and aggravating process. You best shot is swapping parts until you get a handle on what is damaged and what still works.

You might be miles ahead if you have an old mother board to swap in and used different memory chips to see if that radically changed things.
