This was after remounting the Thermaltake Volcano three times and reapplying Arctic Silver III three times. I then got a new Abit motherboard and idle temperature is 45 and load around 55...

Good luck sir.

with a barton it should be reading the processor's thermal diode, not the socket mounted thermistor

what do you mean by stepping? im sorry but i cannot test it in a different motherboard because its out of my budget. do you think i should buy thermalrights?

my system temp is 37 degrees while my cpu is 55. okay, i removed the heatsink and reapplied arctic silver III. when i turned it on, i went to the bios it shows 36. but when it boots to windows it shows 46 in pc alert 4. i restarted the system once again and was surpised to see the same thing, 50 in pc alert. i restarted and went to bios to find the same thing, 50 degrees. when in load its at 55. should i buy thermalrights? i tidied all of the cables and still the same. there's no place to put an intake fan because my case doesn't have any front holes. i don't know what to do.

Reseat the HSF.

Or get a better HSF, although the stock cooler should be enough to even overclock a bit.

stepping is the version of the chip. its model. each revision has a different overclocking potential.

Thermalright makes great copper heatsinks. Get a SLK-900 for maximum cooling potential, and top it off with a 80 or 92 mm fan of your choice. Get a fan with a high CFM rating, and if noise is a concern, be sure to check the fan's dBA rating as well.

one more thing i noticed is whenever i remove a hsf, there's a tiny line of scratch in the hsf. i noticed this when i removed the amd stock fan and when i reseated the vantec hsf. did i put it in the wrong way?

make sure the fan on the heatsink is blowing air towards the processor - not sucking away. I had a 1700+ at 1.5v (too bad it was a tbred A ) and with my volcano9 the thing was 59 idle. I swapped the fan around and temps dropped to 39 idle. Though I might also mention the way i had setup my top fan and my side fan and front fan were causing a vaccum so i fixed it all in one fell swoop.

But if you are going to overclock I say get a SK-7 or SLK800 (I would prefer the SLK800) and then get the YS Tech Variable fan and that will do a great job at cooling....

I am using the same hsf, it's great...
Meaning you must be setting it wrong...
What I did:
1. Make sure it's not the other way around? just match the slope in the hsf to the one in the cpu slot
2. Get a lot of case fans, I have 6 40mm fans blowing in, 1 80mm fan blowing in from the side, and 2 80mm blowing out, and a psu fan...

My system runs 31/40 for Athlon 2600

Bottomline: no mater what hsf you get, no airflow = bad temperature, coz you'll be blowing hot air into the CPU

no i have pc alert 4. how am i able to put case fans if there aren't any more holes? my case just has one hole in the back and that's where i put the exhaust.

Adding case fans is a good place to start, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Cold air drawn in from the front of the case at the bottom. Hot air drawn out the back at the top. If you can arrange your IDE ribbon cables so they don't block airflow. As mentioned mother board monitor is an excellent program for monitoring system temps, fan speed too if you have the sensor. You only need a thin coat of Arctic silver over the core. Some would say paper thin, you don't want a lot of it oozing out when you attach the HSF. If you do decide to do it over use alcohol pads to clean all the old off first. My HSF had a thermal pad on it from the factory, so I took the time to make sure I cleaned it all of first. I have an 1100 t-bird, I have never seen the temp rise above 50, even while gaming. Right now it's 40 with a case temp of 22. Your mileage may vary.

Earlier you said your system temp was 37C in an air conditioned house. That is WAY too high, and there is no way for the HSF to do a proper cooling with the system temp that high. You really need a better case or more case fans.
