Make sure you applied the paste correctly. Too much (thick) or too little (thin) can lead to problems. Make sure it's spread out nicely and isn't too think or thin in any parts. Also, reseat your HSF to make sure it's making contact with the CPU.

i forgot to mention the processor. it's AMD 3200 Venice core.... i didn't think i put on too thick of a layer. I put on enough so that i couldn't see the top of the CPU anymore. is that too much?

What's your ambient temp and what kind of case cooling do you have? Also, what else do you have in that case?

yes, that is too much. you should put on a grain of rice sized bead in the middle and let the force of the HSF squish it out.

oh dang that's all i'm suppose to be using??? yea then i went overboard. it's suppose to be that thin? hmmm... should i clean off the arctic silver 5 and reapply?

my rig is.... antec sonata with BFG geforce 6600GT and 250 gb maxtor 16mb cache hd. those are the important heat generating components.

Absolutely...I have a Venice 3200 with stock HSF, and it idles at 24C, max of 35C under extreme load...

crap!!!!

i really put too much arctic 5 on.... when i tried to take off the hsf the cpu was literally stuck onto the hsf. i pulled out the cpu (w/o realeasing the socket lever) by just pulling out the hsf. when i turned the hsf around.... there was my cpu stuck to the bottom. when i tried to remove the cpu it wouldn't budge.... so i slid it off the side of the heatsink. i apparently scratched part of my heatsink when removing the cpu. cpu pins look ok.... but gahhhhh!!!!!!!! i hope i didn't screw it up too much.

If you scratched the bottom of the HSF where it contacts the CPU, get a new Heatsink!!!
What the grease does is to make sure most of the microscratches on the surfaces are filled, allowing 100% contact between the HSF and the CPU. If you have deep scratches, you won't have a 100% seal...

i scratched the heatsink on the side. the cpu won't touch that area so i think i'm good.

EDIT: when i said on the side... i meant not in the middle of the bottom of the heatsink.

Cool (no pun intended)...
Follow the directions that Jeff linked, and remember that less is more...

Good Luck!

I have very similar problem. ( I hace correct amoun of AS5 tho )

----

Ok i have amd athlon 64 3500+ and msi k8n neo2 platinium mobo. Here is my problem:

So before I installed my XP-90c cooling on my amd 64 3500+ my idle temp was 57-62'C ( IT WAS ON THE STOCK HEATSINK MY CPU CAME WITH )

I istaled my XP-90C with artic silver 5 and Antec 92mm Tornado fan and my temperature is STILL AT 56-59'C

btw- fan is operating at 4700-4900 RPM

PS. MY CPU is at default speed 2.2ghz NO OC

Please help me!

Also, some info:

Here is what I check my stuff with

Temps and voltages:

http://way2far.net/br_members/neo/temps.jpg

again using different program

http://way2far.net/br_members/neo/teamps2.jpg

My bios version is 1.80 ( most recent )

Which 3500+ are you using? Clawhammer, Winchester, Newcastle, or San Diego?

Your VCore is waaaay too high for a non-overclocked processor. Put it at 1.4V .

You are correct, something is wrong. I just wanted to know HOW wrong...

1. Try cleaning off the HSF and CPU very thoroughly, then reapply the AS5 as sparingly as possible.
2. Check to make sure there are no scratches either on the CPU or the HSF.
3. Clear your CMOS and redo your bios settings again (sometimes they can get corrupted after flashing if you don't clear the CMOS)

Let us know...
It should be ~low 40s at idle...

1-I cleaned HSF and the CPU with 70% ethyl rubbing alcohol, these things are clean as they can be. ( there is no change with temps after this )
2. There are very very very minor scratches on the HSF, however, its the part of the heatsin that does not touch the cpu. So it does not really matter.
3. I reset CMOS by taking the batery in and then puting it back in, correct?
Thx in advance

Excellent...to clear the CMOS, there is a jumper that you move over one pin to clear, then back to run. Check your manual...
