CPU upgrade question

I have a Core2 6700 on a P5Bdelux on my photography business PC. I need to do a new build for my daughter and I was thinking of getting a new MB and giving here the 6700 and getting a Quad core for my business/photoshop PC. Forgive my noob question, but if I just swap my core2 duo with a new quad (since the P5B can handle the quad) will I have to do a fresh vista install, or will it find all the right drivers?

No need to reinstall Vista if just a CPU swap. Tried it myself from E6750 to Q9450

Yep, Photoshop doesn't benefit from a quad (yet), but definitely benefits from multiple hard drives, plus all of the RAM you can throw at it.

It may just be easier to build her a new PC and leave yours alone. The 6700 is a good CPU and you won't see huge performance gains by upgrading it. Like the above poster said. You're better off investing in RAM and fast a RAID0 (or RAID5 if you want some parity).

My daughter has my old Opteron 165 dual core and thinks is the fastest computer in the world, after her dad's of course.

If you do think it makes more sense to hand down the 6700, go with the E8400. It's almost as fast as the E8500 and costs much less. Do you overclock at all?

Thanks. I am running Vista 64 bit business with 4g of ram and a couple internal raptor drives. It sounds like the CPU swap might not be worth the hassle. I don't overclock.

Hmm, it seems as if they've now gotten Photoshop CS3 quad-capable, at least while using filters. It still doesn't help with non-filter work, though, as you can see from the link.
