CPU upgrade: Should I buy a Slot A 750 and overclock it or just pay a little bit more and get a 900?

I know that they faster the proc, the lower the likely overclock. So, should I save the 50 bucks and get a 750 hoping that it will make the overclock to 900(which I'm sure it would), or just pay for the 900 and see how much of an overclock I can get out that? I'm just trying to eke out the last little bit of life on my Slot 1 mobo. I'm not quite ready to totally revamp the system until the DDR stuff comes out...and gets cheap.

edit: oops, I meant slot A

I dont think there is a 900Mhz PIII, I think there is an 866 and a 933. The 700e usually overclocks to 933 for most people, so the 750 would probably go higher, its kind of a hard choice.

You are referring to a PIII right? It says Slot 1 so I figure you are. If it is an Athlon, go for the 750.

He's referring to the Athlon. I just got a 750 Athlon Slot-A Tbird, week 28. Reports of 750 Slot A T-birds with 900 cores are common, so I was hopeful. I bought it from AxionTech. It arrived yesterday. I cracked open the case, and was disappointed - it is a 750 core.

Anyway. I will slip the Processor in this weekend, and see if I can hit my goal --- 1ghz. It will be a stretch.

I think if I had to do it again, I would have sprung for the 900. It will almost be a lock for 1 gig, although it does costs about $50 more. My GFD tops out at 1050.

Good luck. If your interested, I can let you know what results I achieve in overclocking my 750 this weekend.

I'd say get the Slot-A 750 and save some money and get an ALpha p7125. I have this cooler and I can get 1GHZ at 2.05V with my 700/700 T-bird Slot-A. It's always cool to the touch as well.

I personally say stay with the old 550@807. DDr won't take that long to price drop. Would be a waste to buy ANOTHER new proc and then a mobo along with new ram...

Well, now that I have a buyer for my old stuff, I am going to wait for DDR prices to drop. Even though, I'm considering spending the money and going with an Intel setup. I've been disappointed lately with my Via setup(Radeon, Win2000 problems, etc).
