cpu upgrade

Currently have an amd xp3200 i want to upgrade to a amd 64 3400 or possibly higher but i am told that i will only notice a performance increse at a resolution of 1024by768 as the resolution gets higher it becomes more gpu bound is this true..
And is it worthwile for me to upgrade to a amd 64 chip im really into gaming but will i notice a little difference or a huge leap

curently running geforce 6800 gt overclocked at 420/1200
3dmark 2003 = 11508...

This is true, the higher the res, the more performance depends on the GPU.

What monitor are you using, and what games are you playing?

yes, resolution depends on the video card. just upgrade to an athlon 64 anyway!! give amd your money.

That is generally true.

At 8x6 the difference would be ~30%. At 12x10 it shrinks to 15%.

you can see the difference between a XP3200+ and even a A64-3500+ is 2% at 1600x1200/8xAA.

You can see that in every game the cpu speed makes almost no difference once you get to 12x10 or 16x12 with 4xAA/8xAF

In FarCry at 16x12 with a 6800GT there is a 5% difference. The only place you see a significant increase is in games that are cpu-limited which right now tend to be older games such as the Q3-based games that will be deep into the triple digits anyway.

You'll notice a large gain even at 1600x1200 as the GT is quite fast.
