So sold my computer to use my old one since I don't game anymore as a poor college student studying all the time. I can live with an old rig but I like HD videos on youtube and this thing really struggles with them.

What kind of CPU usage do you get in a youtube video such as this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8gjrgMOEqQ

On my old system with a P4 3.0ghz, 1gb ram, and a 6800gs video card it uses 98-100% CPU for 1080P vids and is choppy! On 720P videos it is smooth but uses 68-95% cpu usage and seems to barely play them smoothly. Too bad this old video card doesn't can't take advantage of the new nvidia drivers which offer 'GPU-acceleration for smoother online HD videos with the new Adobe Flash 10.1 beta.'

Whats your CPU and CPU usage look like for the linked youtube video on 720P? And CPU usage on 1080P?

5-10% CPU, ~15% GPU @ 1080p

it's too low to differentiate from normal system stuff on 720p.

can the cheap $449 dual core laptops with integrated graphics run youtube videos in HD smoothly?

My $200 Walmart-special laptop with ATI HD3200 graphics and a 1.6Ghz single-core TF-20 CPU can play them without a problem, using Flash 10.1. CPU usage for 1080P running in a window is around 40-60%, but it does hit 100% sometimes when playing full-screen, which is still a bit disappointing to me.

Without Flash 10.1, it is stuck at 100%, and only plays one frame out of five.

good stuff Larry thanks man.

Just like in games I can tell the hd youtube vids use more cpu in full screen than not in full screen. Seems like the flash 10.1 and gpu acceleration helps a lot. A cheap laptop is probably in my future if it has a dedicated GPU that can use flash 10.1. Hopefully flash 10.1 moves out of beta and can be even further optimized, along with future nvidia/ati drivers.

p4 is an old architecture, anything past that will handle the 1080p videos fine :/

My friend's Intel® Core™ Solo processor T1350 @ 1.86ghz with Intel integrated graphics can't play a single 1080P movie without being pegged at 100% (i.e., it chops). IIRC, without GPU hardware acceleration, you need at least an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.0ghz to not drop frames.

Weird, it seems to be pegging a core on my i5 (that is, 25% CPU use) at full screen (1680x1050 using the "1080p" version). Doesn't seem choppy though.

ED.: Actually it does seem choppy...

You got me. I was assuming dual core.
