Are there any charts or databases of what CPUs are bottlenecked by (approximately) what GPUs or vice versa?

I think something like that would be really great for newbs like me not technical enough to fully understand and research this information theirselves :/

I'm looking at getting a new video card to replace my 8800GS (9600GSO), as I don't as many frames as I'd like to in Aion :[ Have an E8400 processor.

I also understand MMOs, especially in areas with lots of characters are heavily CPU dependent, but I need a new video card for up coming stuff anyway.

If you game @ 1650x1050 a good choice is a 4850/gts250 512mb.
@1900x1080 a 4870 1gb/gtx260.

How much you wanna spend? In about a month you'll have more choices.
hd5750 or the hd5770 will be the new midrange and be as fast as a 4870/gtx260 for about 180$, but have a better feature set, lower power requirements, run cooler and have direct x 11 capability.

CPU bottlenecks will depend entirely on the game, as well as the settings and resolution you use.

At the very least get an HD4870 1GB or GTX260 (core 216) regardless of the resolution you're using. These cards will approach being twice as fast as the 8800GS.

well sorta. there probably still should be such information out there.
the problem is reviews of recent cards tend to leave out how they perform with an older cpu. reviews with older cards and older cpus only have benchmarks of older games. its an information gap. it would be nice to know just how bad a newer game would be bottlenecked by older cpus..and how much.

How much are you willing to spend? Here are my best-buy recommendations:

gtx260, gtx275 in single cards or sli. hd4870, hd4890 single or cf. HD5850 single or cf HD5870

My friend plays AION at 1920x1200 with a 9600GSO, and it doesn't seem laggy to me. His CPU however is an overclocked E5200 @ 3.75Ghz.

I would try overclocking your CPU before you think about upgrading your video card. You might also try EVGA Precision or RivaTuner to overclock your 9600GSO, they are very overclockable.

I understand that oftentime, as your resolution decreases, the bottleneck can learn toward CPU side, and as the resolution increase, the bottleneck can lean toward the videocard.

@ VirtualLarry - IRunning around I get 40-100 fps at 1280 x 1024 with full settings maxed with 8x AA, but that's with less people

I've pushed my E8400 up to 3.4 and even 3.6 (unstable), but I for some reason, warcraft 3 always crashes when I overclock. It never crashes in anything other application or game, but crashing when playing dota = GG,

at 1920x1200 overclocking an E8400 would likely have ZERO effect when using a 9600gso. a stock E8400 is way more than enough cpu for a card of that level at any res not to mention 1920x1200.

Thinking about upgrading myself but am wondering if a X2 6400+ would be a bottleneck for any of these new 58xx cards?(@1920x1200 res)

(I wish more benches would be done with different CPU's as not everyone has a quad core)

your cpu would bottleneck the heck out of a 5850/5870. your cpu clock for clock is very slow compared to more modern cpus. your A64 X2 at 3.2 would be about like a Core 2 duo like mine being lowered to 2.2. that would likely kill 40-50% of what the 5850/5870 can do. every game is different of course but overall that would be a massive waste of a good card.

good to know, you might have saved me some money.

So in the case of these new 58xx cards it sounds like a Quad core is almost mandatory?

well a fast modern quad core is certainly preferable with that level of graphics card. an i5 or i7 is ideal if doing a new from scratch build.
