na not off newegg. bought from a guy who was upgrading... and with this card coupled with my sempron 2800 @ 2.14 ghz and 2.5 gigs memory i get from 35-43 fps in cod 4, and devil may cry 4 (pc) (this is with aa x4 and all settings on high). i would not have beleived it if i didnt see it. but a gpu upgrade is sometimes better than a cpu, although if u have a crappy cpu like mine then i'd suggest an upgrade, cause the faster the cpu can send stuff to the gpu the bettr the performance.

We're all just shooting in the dark till u give us more info. We need to know what mobo you have ( which will also tell us what socket CPU you have ) and your budget for this upgrade.

Untill you respond to the questions that people have asked you about your current hardware this thread is going to do noone any good at all.

Looking to find a cheap upgrade that might keep my rig at least decent for the next 2 years, at the least, preferrably.

Just bought an ASUS G50v-A1 and it's pathetic that my laptop is better than my desktop rig.

>_>

Do what i did!

I upgraded to a 3850 (you probably want to upgrade to a 4670 or a 8800GT) and pick up two more gigs of DDR.

Newegg is selling 1GB Super*Talent DDR for $25 each. I've got 4GB going and vista is smooth as butter now. I'd really like to think our processors are decent. I remember a few years back the 3500+ Venice CPU's were all the rage. Now, slap two of those CPU's on one die and that is what we have. The X2 4200+. I like it because CS:S maxed out (besides HDR) at 1680x1050, 50 players in CS_Office, i never hit below 45fps. I linger from 55-80.

I'm having a hard time justifying an upgrade if the 4200+ still performs like a champ.

Also, i hear you on the laptop being better than the desktop. My IBM Thinkpad has a T7500. 2.2Ghz with 4MB of shared L2 cache. Talk about power in a laptop!

I'd say 2GB GBs more RAM and an Asus 9800GT Ultimate with the full 128 SP as the 9800GTX for less money.

LOL at all the uninformed replies.

Appears OP has dropped his question and run, leaving us without the necessary info to answer it properly.

what resolution are you running at? I'm in a similar situtation.. pent d805@3.8, 2 gig, and an x1900xt

i could get a nice bump from the 4850, but i have a 1280x1024 monitor. i can run most games maxed out (mass effect runs smoothly) at that res with decent fps. when i decide to get a 24 inch monitor that's when i'm going to do a major overhaul. it's just not cost effective right now. once i see the fallout 3 benches i'm going to decide on an upgrade

You got caught between the generations of motherboards, tough for you as your board only supports up to the Pentium D processors not the C2D chips.

In your case I would suggest either a Pentium D 950 (eWiz $97) or else a motherboard/cpu refresh (P43 motherboard + e5200 = $160AR). Of these the Pentium D will be faster & cooler than your 805 but is already seriously lagging behind the newer chips. The only reason I suggest that route at all is because you don't have to gut your whole system, just change chips. The e5200 will be considerably faster than the 950 and even cooler and less power consumption (65W versus 130W).

A 4850 will probably handle most stuff up to 19x12 but you might want to spend a bit more and get either a vanilla GTX 260 or a 4870 512MB (either in the $200 range). You spend about 30% more and get a card that will probably last a good 2 years.
