CPU will die or degrade?

A simple question for a notebook processor and a desktop processor,

will their performance degrade? or its just simply die when one of the transistors fail due to overheat?

Or it will be like an LCD screen, still working, just one pixel is in red color?
If that's the case, how would u find out how bad it had degraded?

I wish it just die off so all question settle.... easy to know.

It's rarely the CPU that fails unless you overvolted it, usually something else.

i think they degrade over time, then die. unless u do something like feeding it too much voltage.

Lets not talk about overclocking it.

As simple as it is, chances are its transistor failure or over heated issues.

So do they degrade or just die off?

If you damage it from overvolting, it will slowly degrade

It can do both. It will degrade but the question is whether you'll ever notice. Typically a processor (especially the small scaled modern processors) will need more and more voltage to perform the same way. The lower the voltage is from the start the less extra you need through the years. It may therefore be that you will never notice it needs more voltage. It may also die before ever getting the chance.

OC'ed processors show this behaviour more clearly. They get more voltage and run at higher frequencies shortening their lifespan. But how much depends on the specific processor and may vary much. Some will need more voltage and continue to perform, others will simply die at some point. And some may appear to last forever, performing at a high level without needing voltage adjustments. But the same process happens in every chip. They just aren't effected to the same degree.

In my experience, the only time I've had a bad CPU it just simply stopped working.

I have never personally seen a chip "degrade" over time but I also usually don't keep them for an extended period so I am likely never to notice any degradation.

I had an old p3--500 that became unstable after many years of 24/7 crunching. it was degredation and caused results to be inacurate. The system would still boot fine(not dead) just degraded(not accurate). Never overclocked or overvolted.(possibly poorly cooled from time to time(cat hair ftl) So they will die/degrade but they will more than likely reach obselesence before death.
