Thanks!

Guessing the 2k barrier would be around 5.2GHz with Haswell.

I could post at 5.1GHz but bsod at windows loading. Didn't try over 1.4v's.

Maybe 2 cores with HT disabled would do the trick?

Probably.... I disable three modules of my FX and can get into Windows at higher clocks than I can with all four modules enabled. (~5.34GHz max vs. ~5.55GHz max). Doing that might get you there.

I might try that later. Did have some success with a 2550k in the past that way. Dang chip tapped out at 5.6GHz! Was good for some benchmarking tho.

can be damaged from the current draw? which part of the chip, and how? electromigration? did you pull this out of your tail?

Read.

Later versions of Prime95 cause overclocked chips to overvolt and draw too much power. This is all due to utilization of AVX instructions to create load. Which is why I would like to know what CPU-Z is using to create load.

A10-7700k - 924/2656
at 3.8Ghz with DDR-1866.

Just to compare, I put my Piledriver based FX to 3.8GHz (19x200) @ 1.2v, my RAM to 1600MHz (9-9-9-24-33), and disabled two of my modules so I have a four core CPU. I scored 901 / 2450. So it seems even with having 8MB of L3 the Steamroller based APU's scored better. But under nice cool water and this low clockspeed and voltage my CPU only used about 48 watts max (watching my Kill-O-Watt) during the MT test.

*edit - Changed my memory to 1866MHz (11-11-11-33-45), scored about the same. My memory won't run with the same timings at 1866MHz.

the L3 is nearly useless on our chips. You should overclock higher to 4.3ghz like me, or maybe you like your low TDP. 4.3ghz is the sweet spot before power draw bifurcates

That's kind of interesting. I recently built two A4-6300 dual-core/single-module Richland APU rigs, with Sandisk SSD PLUS 120GB, and MSI A55M FM2+ mobos. With the included-with-case PSU, an Allied "300W", I measured 36W idle in Linux Mint 17.2 64-bit MATE, and 71W loading a web browser and browsing.

It kind of blows my mind, that a four-core/dual-module FX CPU would be drawing less power, during a MT benchmark.

But then again, the FX CPU lacks an IGP, so perhaps that's where some of the power is going?

And I expect that you have a fairly efficient 80+ or better PSU, whereas the case PSU that I was using, was (I'm totally guessing here) probably 65-75% efficient at best. Def. not 80+.

That's disturbing considering my FX 4350 draws more power than that. Also Kill-O-Watts are less accurate below 60W for some reason, I was getting inconsistent readings off my 9W Intel NUC then again I could hve had a lemon Kill-O-Watt.

I normally run it at ~5GHz. Just wanted to compare. Also, I've seen FX43xx / APU gaming benches, the L3 does appear to help as the FX is often a few percent faster than the APU's at the same clockspeed, my guess is the L3 is helping there.

I have this power supply. Idle is around 130 watts, peak power use was in the 170's during the test. Keep in mind I undervolted to 1.2v, too. An FX 4130 or 4300, or other similar clocked part is probably at 1.3v+ normally, mine just happens to do well with underclocking / undervolting.

I was in the 170's (watts) during the MT test, for whatever it's worth.

it helps, but like I said, a few percent, which is nearly useless to me. just clock 3% higher unless it's WinRAR we're talking about, in which case clock 15% higher :sneaky:

wonder why it and bulldozer don't need the L3 like Phenom 2 did but

If that's baking your noodle figure this out. Compare my SB-E above to RaistlinZ's HW-E. He's thumping me pretty good on single thread, I'm crunching him equally hard in multi thread......

Closest modern cpu that scores close to my MT number appears to be a oced G3258@5Ghz.

Some 4C/4T to compare...

I'm actually using DDR3-1333 go figure.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

But it seems to OC well, just use 12 GB here.

Not sure if he's updating it these days as that was beta.

Actually pretty sure he isn't.

There are still CASUALS using single cpu systems? Just wait and see when I bust out my dual pentium 3 1ghz system tomorrow and slaughter the competition.
