OK. I'm finally making the plunge into DVD recording, with a Plextor PX-708A. I'll also be making alot of CD's. What makes of DVD+R and CD-RW media are the most reliable?

TIA,

I generally prefer Verbatim and Mitsubishi ones. For CD-Rs, the ones with the Mitsubishi Super-Azo or the newer Sonic-Azo dyes are great.

Same here.

I use SW Technology DVD-R discs, they work just fine with my NEC 2500A and they're like half the price of Verbatim.

I second the list on the link. I use Maxell exclusively. I think I ordered mine from Meritline last time. Yep, 4X, but that is because I need them as printables (I use them for DVD authoring - not to be confused with Authoring DVDs.) Also, Maxell is available at WallyWorld, err Wal-Mart.

Sunner, what speed are the SW tech discs rated at? My 4X rated Verbatim DVD-Rs will do 8X. Haven't tried anything else though.

They're "just" 4X discs.
But that's fine with me really, I don't burn that many discs, and it's not like I can't use the computer for other things while burning

To repeat myself, Meritline. There are some other stores too, but I cannot remember them at the moment.

OK. That's a nice list. Seems to indicate such a thing as a Taiyo Yuden DVD+R disc, of superior quality. Plextor also has it listed in their recommended list (DVD+R47TY5PA or DVD+R47TYA). Has anybody every seen one? Has anybody every seen one for sale? In the US? Anywhere else?

I suppose I could fall back to the Ritek (RICOHJPN) brand, but nomorecoaster seems to like the TY better.

I just got the plextor 708a a few months ago and haven't run into any real problems yet. I haven't experimented with a lot of different media yet though. The only moment of confusion I can think of is some trouble I had recently while backing up a few DVD movies. I ripped the movies to image files and made two copies of each movie.. one on a Memorex 4x DVD-R disc (Prodisc) and another on a Fujifilm 2.4x DVD+R disc (RICOHJPN). After watching the movies again (on the memorex backups), I noticed on a couple movies that there was some pixilation and skips on them. I thought maybe I did something wrong when ripping them until I popped in the fujifilm discs and saw that they were all perfectly fine. the results I got were all pretty much consistent in 4 different DVD players I later tested the discs on (to rule out a DVD player problem). I've just been assuming the memorex discs I bought were of bad quality. Anybody run into weird problems like this with media?

p.s. I originally wasn't planning on posting this but this thread kind of reminded me of the problem and seemed like it was in the same ballpark. sorry if it's a little off-topic. Maybe I'll make a new thread for it.

Remember that it's just one opinion on that website and I for sure don't agree with some of the ratings. For example he rates Princo as "3rd class media" and CMC as "4th class". CMC has a lot of OEM contracts with brands such as Philips, HP and TDK and these discs are for sure not "4th class media". In fact at least the 4x CMC DVD+Rs of these brands are not bad at all imho. The problem is that CMC also seems to release its B-grade media to the market under more unknown brands and that far from all burners firmwares have optimized burn strategies for CMC, hence the reason for all this bashing on CMC. Princo on the other hand does not have any media that qualify to be A grade imho and has no contracts with any major brand.
He also rates Optodisc -R as "2nd class" and the +R as "4th class" and I have not seen any proof that there would be any major difference between these in terms of quality.

Also remember that burn quality depends a lot on the writer too, not only the media and the person who wrote that website owns a BTC burner which basically burns crap quality on all kind of discs...

Anyway TY is without doubt some of the best quality discs you can buy. You'll find them at for example rima.com or accaproducts.com

Actually, much of this can be validated by comparing this chart to the media ratings on DVDrHelp (tested by users, not test labs). I cannot say CMC 4x is bad, but I can say it for the 2X and 1X media from personal experience.

Same goes for Ritek. Their 1x stuff was pure junk. But, I do wonder if Ritek's 4x should be in the 2nd class. If it is, it barely missed 1st.

Princo 1x/2x was junk too. The failure on burn was about 10%, but repeated reads on a settop moved into the 50% range. It would do ok if you burned about 10 minutes, but anything over the 10min mark would be corrupted.

Yes, I have bought from Supermedia too. Good deals there too. I have bought media from here too and they were reliable - http://www.tapeandmedia.com

Of course, that is my opinion. I have been wrong. BTW, I use Pioneer writers (104/107).

Actually the list points out that Ritek +R is 2nd-class, whereas Ritek -R is 4th class. When you were talking about their 1X, was that -R or +R?

Ritek -R. But the list does like Ritek 4x -R as 2nd. That would be RITEKG04. I do think TY and Maxell are better, but just barely. But if I could not get Maxell, I would use TY and not Ritek. Maybe it was the 1x/2x burnage that makes me feel that way.

A work about RitekG04. The quality seems to have been heading south the last couple months on their non branded disks. The general opinion is for the non branded media they are mixing batches to distribute the fair disks with the good, and as a result overall burn quality is becoming questionable. Verify in Nero is your friend.

I use TDk for cdr, haven't made on ecoaster yet, plus at costco every now and again they can be bought 2x100 for 19.99.

as for DVDr, I really like memorex (both dvd+r and dvd-r) except one batch of 50 that I bought of 4x media only would read as 2x, but every other batch (in 10s) have all read as 4x, I still don't know what was up with that 50 pack. Anyway, I use a nec 1300a and haven't had any coasters with compusa 1x media or memorex.
