I tried the Maryland soft shell crabs once while visiting Maryland. I had it in the form of crab cakes. I say... "What! There are shells in my crab cake." I am told that the soft shell crabs are prepared with the shell. They are soft so you just chew it.

No, no, no. I don't like my crab cakes crunchy. Other than this variety, I think cooked crabs are yummy.

After seeing above the MickyD version of a lobster, I don't need to taste one. I encourage others to seek out a reputable place to order one.

I also would like to give a call out to fried clams. I believe I'll be ordering some this coming weekend. The only issue I have is that every restaurant wants to serve them with french fries and cole slaw. The place I am going to, will allow me to substitute mash potatoes and butternut squash. Sometimes having some beer battered fried onion rings on the side is a nice touch. That's the way to go.

Now that I am thinking about this, a combo plate with clams and scallops would be divine.

Crab. More meaty with actual flavor. Every time I've had lobster in the past it tasted like watery sewage. I'll take me some crab legs any day.

Flavor... Good crab by a hair. But, you get to eat your meal with lobster. With crab, if you relied on that for sustenance, you'd die of starvation while you were busy cracking open those legs.

After a short while you learn real quick how to deal with crab legs. I can mow through a dozen legs in 5 minutes easy these days.

It's easy to overcook fish. It's easy to overcook crustaceans. Overcooked lobster is very bad. I think that's what you had.

If I experienced eating a steak that tasted like shoe leather, you probably would tell me to try it again somewhere else. I encourage you to try lobster again somewhere else.

Dungeness crab has to be my favorite. After that Maine Lobster. After that snow crab. After that king crab. After that California lobster.

Growing up, we always had deviled crab...of course, I've had crab cakes and crab stuffed mushrooms (both from lump crab meat). I've not had the guts to order a crab boil in a restaurant or eat crab legs off buffets (where I've seen them). I was always swayed to avoid them because of the cost vs perception of whether or not I'd enjoy them (considering Lobster is often cheaper/less work due to more meat being in the tail)...for the buffet, I always avoided crab legs because I never could trust that they wouldn't kill me...come on, it's seafood on a buffet. (I've never been to Vegas)

I don't like eating insect guts. My parents suckered me into eating snails and shrimp when I was younger until one day I saw them swimming in a tank in front of a seafood restaurant. Pull all those legs off and eat em whole... tasty right? *barf*

How many places would one have to try to get "good lobster" then? Because this is what it tastes like no matter where I've tried it from in the past.

Note, I no longer even bother ordering it simply because I discovered that I just plain don't like lobster for the aforementioned reasons.

There's a reason people don't like lobster over crab:

Crab meat freezes well, lobster doesn't. Most seafood you get in restaurants is frozen (unless you live on the coasts or you're someplace that has a tank). Lobster is almost always overcooked and rubbery.

If you have the privilege of going to a lobster boil in Maine or the Carolinas at anytime in your life, you'll change your opinion of lobster immediately.

If you deliver (both figuratively and literally), mad props to you.

Price?

I ordered from him last Thanksgiving and was extremely satisified. Might do so again this year if my taste buds come back online...

Lobster. When done properly lobster is much better than crab, which I also love. The problem is that lobster is extremely difficult to cook properly, even tougher than properly searing a diver scallop. For those saying that lobster is tough or stringy it sounds like you've only had it over-cooked because when it is done properly there is no contest.

Neither are difficult to cook. All you do is fill a pot with water and dump them in for a specific amount of time. If watching a timer is difficult, then I feel sorry for the cook.

Agreed- they're not difficult to cook at all. Salt some water until it tastes like the ocean, bring to a rolling boil, split a live lobster from the head down to mid torso to kill it instantly (I don't do the 'boil alive' bit), and boil for about 15 minutes for a 1 lb, 20 minutes for 1.5 lb, and 25 minutes for a 2 lb. They'll be bright red when cooked all the way through.

Let my people go!

I don't like either. I can eat shrimp all day, and people tell me all the time they're almost the same. No.

they both taste like shit if they have been frozen. to everyone here who suggested that frozen shellfish might be edible.

i'd say ... taste wise, alaskan king crab tastes better than lobster. slightly better.

i do however like the meatiness of the lobster better; when you learn how to, you can rip into a lobster in 5 minutes and leave nothing but a tiny pile of shell.

so .. i will go with .. lobster.

I'd take Dungeness, Kona, or king Crab over Lobster. I'd take soft shell, snow crab, or other crab types below Lobster. I'd take crawfish lowwer than other crab types, unless its at a restaurant and they are serving me crawfish etouffee, I'd take crawfish etouffee over lobster tails or claws or over any crab.

Therefore, I vote for crawfish, strictly due to the goodness of louisana creole cooking.

Didn't say lobster was difficult to cook. Said it was difficult to cook properly. Sure it's simple to throw it in water and set a timer. Good luck not turning it to rubber using that method.

From Boston.com a recipe for making a lobster roll. The slide show of how different New England restaurants serve lobster rolls made my mouth water. I want a lobster roll. And I want it now!

http://www.boston.com/food-dining/f...YxYOwrCLFfBpmXg44FPHxI/story.html?p1=story_hp

Grandma's recipe

2 each 1 ¼ pound lobsters, steamed
¼ cup pickles, diced small
¼ cup celery, diced small
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon white pepper
½ cup mayonnaise
4 hot dog buns
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon kosher salt
Remove all meat from the lobster and dice into medium size pieces. Mix the mayonnaise, pickles, celery, lemon juice, celery salt, kosher salt, and pepper with the lobster. Reserve. In a non-stick pan or on a griddle, melt the butter. Lightly toast the hot dog buns on both sides. Fill the buns with lobster salad and serve. This recipe is best served with homemade cole slaw and chips.

It's open season on dungeness crab here in the Puget Sound. Planning on getting my pots in the water Friday night if I can get outta town early enough.

Dungeness crab > lobster.

West coast = best coast.

That is NOT a lobster roll

THIS is a lobster roll. Notice the grilled edge of the bun (sometimes w/ garlic!)

Tough question. Crab is harder to ruin, but also has less meat. I personally think a well-cooked lobster is better by a tail.

How about clams vs mussels vs oysters?

Oysters raw, mussels cooked, could pass on clams.

I love crab and lobster. Flavour of good crab is better, lobster probably better texture if cooked right.

My absolute favourite however is spot prawns (when they are in season locally.) they don't freeze well and go to shit on ice pretty fast. Must be caught that day or kept in a live well to be worth a damn.
