That's why I'm going to play Guild Wars. MMORPG + no monthly fee = best of both worlds.

God I hope their plan takes off so more people emulate it.

(For those who don't know: The reason they're not charging a monthly fee is because they plan on regularly releasing extra content in the form of a discrete purchase; I think they were shooting for 4 times a year or something like that. So instead of $20/month, you pay $30-$40 for an expansion pack 4 times a year. I hope it works.)

Yeah, GW is the way to go. I can't wait til summer, I think I'll pour my soul into that one.

GW is fine if you liked diablo on Bnet... problem is the entire game is nothing but instances.... which sucks... zoning and multiple mirrors of the same zone (towns and regular zones should NEVER be instantanced gg EQ2) breaks the immersion of the game and complicates issues with grouping etc..

GW started out promising but will never hold a candle to the real MMOs...

I'd be happy to post pics but I don't know where to link them from. I don't have a domain name or server myself to place them.

First off. I was one of the BIGGEST anti-pay-to-play guy here at work. Yaddy yaddy. With that out of the way. One of the guys here let me use his 10-day trial and I told him he was wasting his time LOL....wrong. 2 hours later I was out buying my copy AND one for the Mrs. I had to drive to 2 different EB games stores each had one copy for me. This was during the shortage where everyone was selling them for $70+ on ebay so in this case I lucked out.

For those of you that don't understand the whole pay to play thing... you really get what you pay for and more. The world is enormous, no load times other than when you first connect or drop into an instanced dungeon etc.

Get your free 10day trial from a friend........you WILL be a hopeless addict to World of Warcrack. LOL!

Yeah i will be playing GW as well. I hope it works out so we can go back to the expansions only, instead of the fee+ expansion of current MMORPG's.

If you only dinged 30, you don't play much. I have a 60 with an epic mount already and almost all rare/epic gear. I have the key to upper brs too.

People who buy the game get a 10 day free trial for a friend. It might be collector's edition only though, i'm not sure. I got hooked in beta.

Very little cheating in WoW, none that I've seen.

Perfect sense if Office was an MMORPG. That's how they've always worked, since the days of UO.

LOL - it's NOTHING like that. How can you even seriously try to make that comparison? Does Office require insane amounts of top-of-the-line server equipment and a large team of people that work 24/7 on the game to address issues, monitor gameplay, add content, etc?

You buy Office and then you're on your own - you get the occassional free patch and support that you have to pay for. You buy WoW and you get to use the best MMORPG hardware around, get 24/7 support, and get people constantly working on new content. And you get all of that for only $13/month. It seems like a bargain to me.

All you are buying when you buy a MMO is a client....
you pay for the server to be up and the content to be developed... the games never end... bandwith servers and manpower cost money...
so do MMOs

Don't knock it till you've tried it, it beats the hell out of $50-$150+ a month for tv. Now THAT is insane. The sh!t they have on these days is completely unwatchable. Even formerly good channels like Discovery have dumbed it down for ratings.

Its called regular content updates. Theres also the fact running such massive server farms is NOT cheap.

Right On! It's actually kind of funny what people will resist spending their money on but things that are normal expenses such as cable or satellite are just accepted. The thought of paying to play a game is a debate that seems to never end but get ready for everything to change....I see shooters and all types of online play shifting to some type of pay-to-play format. Just watch. It may not be pay by the month but some format of continual residual income for the developing house. In the end it only leads to better content, experience, lack of cheating and fun. The ONLY thing I wish they would change is the initial investment should be less. Why should I pay $50 to get into a $13/month commitment. The game should be less than $25 at least but not free. There needs to be some kind of population control or the servers would be unplayable.

I mean if shooters were on a service like this you could have real stat tracking, anti-cheat, etc. The TKer would be non-existent, all the 12year old brats that for some reason want to ruin the game for others would be nullified. Steam could have been close if they would have went a little further like how the PS2 game does SOCOMM2 where your player is ranked and has real stats, can only play on servers of equal skill level etc. As much as I hated my experience on SOCOMM2 with a gamepad (arghghgh) it shed some light on how well 3D shooters could be run if under a game service.

Who can't squeeze $12-13 a month into their entertainment expense? (AND TRUSE ME, you'll be on WoW so much that you won't be spending money somewhere else. Deal if you ask me. I could easily spend $50 at the bar or whatever else. Sheet when my wife and I go to a movie alone that is a $30 affair.) Aside from the fact Blizzard will be reaping the rewards, but obvioulsy they did a damn good job because I tried EQ... got bored, tried UO back in the day... bored, tried Asherons naaaa, tried Dark Age kinda liked that but none of them lasted more than a week for me. This one Woot!
