If you think this is a theatrical leap, you are ignorant to what goes on everyday and why food must be thrown away and not freely given out.
I can see why they would have to throw away out of date food rather than give it away but I'm not seeing any liability issues from giving away something that is safe to sell.

Most of the stuff a bakery throws out is still good. They just make things fresh the next day. Same with many prepared foods.

The liability is not worth it for just one scammer.

This is not my problem, hence; if one is ignorant to this battle they should do their own research as to why.

That sucks. They could have at least just taken the cost off his pay cheque or something. Firing is way excessive over something that cost no more than a few bucks.

Heck if I was the owner I would just let it slide considering it was to help the needy.

Why in the seven hells should they not fire someone for repeated doing something they were told not to do?

It's really interesting how polarizing this seems to be. Pretty much every news site I see this on has people divided in their reactions, regardless of what political or social crowd the news site caters to.

My mother for example loves Fox News but she agrees with me that the firing was appropriate.

It was only a muffin, and it was for a good cause.

It was only a box of muffins, and it was for a good cause.

It was only a few bucks from the till, and it was for a good cause.

So tell me, Mr. Generous, why don't you start a business and give away muffins to everybody who needs one? Clearly you and others in this thread that the owners of this restaurant don't know how to run a business. Step up and show them how! Here's your chance to help the world!

Well as long as none of you start whinging when the boss bends you over about some trivial thing.

I am assuming here that you're going to hold yourselves to the same standards and you won't mind being fired over a few cents.

This isn't about discarded food though.

This is food that's currently being sold and is fit for consumption.

I will repeat.

The food being discarded that I was speaking about has nothing wrong with it. If the store was open for longer, it would continue to be sold.

The food is perfectly edible and fine for consumption.

They cannot give it away to even charities because of idiotic lawsuits.

Second harvest goes around to many commercial food places and collects food for the needy every night. Its a freaking huge operation as they also get semi truck loads of canned foods etc directly from manufacturers.

They are totally fussy about what they will accept and restaurants do not easily qualify to donate food.

How do we know that this guy is or Cracker barrel is telling the whole story, the guy could have been a major FU or any number of other things and this was just the listed official reason for firing. Four warnings not to steal seem sufficient to me before firing on the fifth time he got caught.

The food this thread is about wasn't discarded. It was for sale at the time. The price charged for it does not effect whether it's fit for consumption or not.

My boss should be able to fire me if he doesn't like my hair or any other stupid reason he wants. It's his business. Why shouldn't he be able to fire me for theft?

Let's try this again:

What lawsuit could occur from the old man's actions that couldn't have occurred if the muffin had been bought and paid for?

Precisely which lawsuit did the employee expose his employers to?

You do realize that restaurants are an extremely tough business and go under all the time, don't you?

Meh, this Veliko asshole spouts his ignorant opinion all over this forum. It's not surprising it continue in this thread.

I can't believe the mods allow him to mention Pirate Bay in his sig as a source for copyrighted material.

It's clear you are either a 12 year old or have a mental disability.

There is no point arguing or explaining things further to you.

Now you may or may not have a valid point but before you start chest beating it might be an idea to try to articulate said potential point.

Absolutely heartless and atrocious. Every restaurant should double up as a homeless shelter and offer free food. You don't know what these people have been through. It's been shown that as much as a third of the homeless population have severe mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder that prevents them from holding a job.

<serious>It does seem reasonable to help the needy, but taking from a restaurant or any kind of food shop and giving it to the needy could easily become a slippery slope. Where would you draw the line?
