I am selling a car on craigslist. This guy emailed me saying he will pay more than what I am asking (why would he say that?) and his phone number is from two states away (he is area code 619 in San Diego, CA, I am in Washington State).

Also, what would they possibly do with my information? (phone number, email, etc..)

If you have to ask on a messageboard, it is most likely a scam. Trust your instincts. Don't let them waste your time.

If someone offers to pay you more than what you are asking it is most likely a scam. Why would a buyer be willing to pay more than what you are asking for? Its a trick that they use to let your guard down. If its too good to be true then most likely it is.

Why do some people offer more for a house than it was originally listed at? Because they want it more than someone else willing to pay asking price.

And, thanks to cell phones it's not always the case that the person lives within the area code his phone number belongs to. Could have moved and kept his cell number.

Or it could be a scam. Is this a junker car listed on ebay? Or some rare classic car? Junker? Guy's a scam. But then you already knew that

Probably one of them samcro, coming to make a drop and he really likes the car...

I deal with CL quiet a lot, buy and sell stuff. I have a separate gmail address and corresponding google voice number just for this and other stuff that have high probability of spam, do not use my real name either.

I sell shit on CL all the time and have had numerous people offer more than I was asking for something. It's always because they don't want me to sell it to anyone else and hope I'll hold the item a few days until they can come get it. The 2 states away thing could be a scam, but being offer more than you're asking price, I dunno I see nothing odd about that.

It's a scam. They pay with fake cashier's check, you send item and get nailed both ways. Another version I have heard of involves the same fake checks, over-payment, item sold and partial refund. Triple whammy on that one!

Run, away.

Tell them fine ... they can drive on over and pay cash.

No go you say? Why I'm simply shocked!

Certified money order? fuck taking that risk of a fake one. Just ask for cash.

If you're worried about a fake you take it to the post office and get the cash immediately before you actually sell anything. It's one of the more secure ways of getting money since the PO knows immediately if it's legit or not. There's no risk of a "bounced" money order if you go to the PO.

Uhhh you realize were talking about Craigslist right?

Never have I had a deal where someone gives the other a money order and says: "OK, hang on while I take it to the post office and verify if before giving my part of the deal."

Also, read the link from Craigslist concerning scam warnings: https://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.

It's your sale, you can do whatever the fuck you want. Tell the guy "if you can't do cash, then the money order needs to clear first." It's up to him whether that's acceptable or not.

You don't take money orders to the bank, they don't have access to the system to know if it's legit or not. They'll cash it and only find out it's BS later and that's why you can get screwed. That's why you take the money orders to the post office. If you leave the PO with cash in hand then you know it was legit, and nothing else will come of it.

OP - talk to the person; a cell phone call can't hurt, if your concerned; block your number. Depending on what type of a car it is - I would drive 1,500 miles for some cars, not across the town for others. Tell him you want cash, tell him you won't hold it without a deposit, whatever you think is fair. Proceed with caution, but proceed.

I have been using a locally based sell and trade website where the buyers and sellers are verified legitimate from past transactions. But I will still browse for deals on CL as well.
