Never a problem at all with her. And now for the first time the convergence was bowed (as in bowtie) on each color by a good 2 inches when I turned her on. After about 1-2 minutes and getting up to temp it's fine.

Telltale sign of convergence board/solder going bad.

A co-worker is having the same issue with a 50" mits diamond. I feel both your pains. Depending on what its worth to you you can usually get something like that fixed for between 250$ to 500$

Ouch, GL w/ that. I had it happen to me a few months a go on my Mits 42". I replaced the convergence ICs but wasn't able to totally fix the issue. The problem I had was the red convergence just plain went crazy on the right side of the screen. I was kinda upset that I barely got three years out of the set. Good luck getting it fixed/dealt with. Sharp helped me out w/ my problem, I am the proud owner of a band-free 52" D64 series.

There is a lot of replacement info about replaceing the ICs google should find it for you. The service manuals that are available were pretty useless for my model, may be the same for you. If you have a steady hand, patience, and soldering exp I think the problem could be fixed if it turns into more of a constant thing. Good Luck.

*CRY*

She's done. Gave me 8 years of HDTV goodness though.

It takes over an hour for the convergence to 'snap' into place. If it even does at all.

I had the same thing happen on my Mitsu projection SDTV. Cost me a couple hundred bucks but it was fixed and has worked flawlessly since (she's now almost 15 years old).

My 48in JVC just went this weekend, Im pulling the convergence board right now and Im gonna replace the offending chips Here is a blog of a guy who did it himself
They are the STK392-110 IC controls, if you own a crt HD television, this will at some point happen to you as almost all units use this type of chip. There are upgrade chips depending on your unit available, make sure to use them as the STK392-110's have a epidemic failure rate.

If you are handy with a solder iron you can do the repair for 50$ parts included. If you own a JVC rejoice as your units convergence board can be accessed from the front and can be removed in under 10 minutes. Make sure not to buy the no name brand chips (only buy Sanyo) as there are many knock off sub-par units from china available.

here is a pic of what the IC's look like, on the left

Front access on a JVC AV 48wp30 (all jvc's should have this)

Really good thread on IC replacement

Its the stk series of chips that are failing ?
Anyone with a few hours of soldering experience can change those out.
Buy some desoldering braid, and remove them.
That is an easy repair, it isn't even a double sided board.

Or if it is just a thing where they work sometimes and not others, reflow the joints with a soldering iron and some small diameter solder.

Oh, and one more thing... if you have this problem stop using the set immediately as it will cause other damage if left uncorrected.

Curious as to why the chips are failing so often ?
I worked for a number of years for RCA/GE in the consumer electronics division both designing sets and also managing warranty repair center claims to see why things failed.

We used quite a few of the STK (sanyo) series parts, they make everything from audio amps, to convergence parts and never saw that many failures unless it was a product design problem.
The parts have a failure rate but it shouldn't be that high unless there are some design flaws in the set.

Shucks, on another side note if you own a JVC and are going to do this repair DO NOT REMOVE THE REAR COVER WHILE THE UNIT IS PLUGGED IN!!!
If you do so you will wipe the eprom and your set will be DOA. You should never open a crt with the power on/pugged in but this neat little "feature" on JVC"s could ruin your whole day.

Ill let you all know how my repair works out as it should be done tomorrow.

It has happened to other people
even a friend of ours

so in 7 years we have changed them 4 times not too bad
mat electronics have lasted us the longest i dont know why but they are also the cheapest

That is still absurdly high. Twice in 7 years would be too many.
My guess is the heatsinks used on the parts are too small for the load they sink.

I had the same thing happen on my RPTV. I have a 65" Toshiba that was ISF calibrated. I decided to pay the $450 and get it fixed. I still love my tv.

thats my guess, i should look for a 12v DC line inside the tv and mount a couple case fans to it

Well, finally got my chips in. I now have a pretty good idea of why these fail. Of the four chips replaced (two boards for my brothers and my own tv's) all had two vey tiny fingerprins of thermal grease in each. After reading many threads on the subject this is quite common with some having none at all.

Ill post tonight to let ya all know how it worked
