I agree, get a cheap cpu/mobo combo and a nice mid range video card and your set, even your PC2700 ram will still work well with it.

If you must play and have two grand burning a hole in your pocket build a new conroe rig. But unless you do some serious CPU intense stuff on your computer, the increase in performance from a decent 939 system to a conroe system definately won't be worth the price difference from $300 to $2000
I'm so out of touch with hardware since I haven't had money to spend on it for so long. Anyone care to link a recommended 939? I feel like I should know where to look but I don't.

The best etailers to look at
Newegg
Mwave
Monarch
ZipZoomFly
Tank Guys

939 Motherboards I like
Epox 9NPA ultra
Asus A8NE
DFI ultra D
MSI neo4

really cheap but decent
Asrock sata II
ECS extreme
biostar

Many of the etailers sell "combos" with motherboard and CPU installed and tested, you can usually save a few dollars as compared to buying them seperately and they even throw in free games or goodies sometimes.

Cheap but powerful enough CPU's
Sempron 3100+
A64's 3200,3500,3700

Also chuck in a 7600gt and you'll be set!

this is my only computer in use... running fine for over 4 years now.

AXP 1700+
768mb PC2100
WD1200JB
GF3 Ti500

no complains, plays CS fine, faster than my cousin's P4 2.8HT with 256mb ram.

Worse than yours except for graphics card.

iirc, northwoods are faster than AXPs with the same + rating

up until january, i was running an
AXP 2500+ barton @ ~2.2 GHz
1 GB PC2700 @ 183 MHz (board wouldn't work any faster than that)
9800 Pro

since then i've gone on a building spree (yay fry's combos!)

my main rig:
Athlon XP 2500+ @ 1.6Ghz (Barton but can only run 266MHz bus on mobo )
768MB PC2100/2700
200GB, 160GB, and 100GB 7200RPM
ATI Radeon 9700 128MB AGP graphics card

I've been REALLY itching to upgrade now that the X2s are below $200, and have actually started to collect parts (Case/psu, 150GB raptor ). I'm looking forward to dual core processing, PCI-express graphics, and USB 2.0.

Here it is:

Athlon XP 1800+
1.5 GB pc2700 DIMM
GeForce 3
1x 120 GB Western Digital HD
1x 80 GB Maxtor
Sony DVD ROM
Mashita 12x CDRW

Users of "ancient" hardware represent your rigs.

That's not too bad, when my main rig's mobo died, I had to use a P133 laptop w/19-something ram with XP for 3 months.

My HTPC is the slowest computer I use regularly, but with a whole PILE of storage
Barton 2500+,
soyo dragon+
768 ddr333
9700pro
30gb maxtor boot
200gb maxtor video/dvd
320gb WDC tv storage
lite-on 4x dvdrw

I also have enough hardware left over (less an HD) to build the following:
Barton 2500+
ecs kt600
512mb DDR333
6800OC AGP
16x DVDROM
48x CDRW

Everything here in Peru is absolutely archaic, ancient isn´t even descriptive enough. Besides that everything that´s not from Lima is pirated, I don´t own any pirated stuff, but I mean everything in all the internet cafe´s are. Everyone here thinks P4s are cool and they´re really happy with a 2.4B. Myself, I am not so fortunate, the smokinist computer in here is an old OptiPlex at 733Mhz (a Coppermine thank the Lord) with 256 ram. Everything else in this café is a 450mhz Katmai, otherwise specs are the same. Oh, can´t forget, ALL integrated graphics, the best one has integrated 8mb of agp 2x, I believe this 733 has 4mb.
For the guy that couldn´t remember what 486s run at, it´s around 30mhz. I know because I saw one up in our storage room. Practically ever other compy down here, aside from the ones I mentioned, is a Cyrix 6x86. For those that are fortunate enough to be unfamiliar with those, they used a PR system much like AMD because their integer performance was a lot better than the Pentium´s, but their FPU was crap compared to the Pentium. Those things choke when banner ads show up.

ADDAvenger,

Welcome to AnandTech Forums. For your information, you are posting on the largest English language computer oriented forums in the world. You have no idea how many members we have with registered addresses @microsoft.com, adoble.com, symantec.com, etc.

What if any of them saw your post and reported it to their piracy department? What do you think we would do if they sent us a legal request for all information we have about you? The answer is, we would give it to them.

Even if you are living on the highest peak in the Peruvian Andes, you may as well run naked through your town square with a big sign saying, "Kick me. I'm an idiot." on your back.

If you intend to continue posting on our forums, please keep your discussions legal.

Why should be be banned? He said the Internet Cafe he goes to has pirated XP Pro, not that HE pirates XP Pro to use at home.

So stop crapping and post the specs of your oldest in-use computer!

Apparently you didn't read enough, because I did. I have the second worst main computer in here. Didn't notice he said cafe though, so that's my mistake for not reading it well enough.

Our oldest in-use is a PR 133 Cyrix 6x86 set to run at PR166 with 32mb ram and 98, 98se I believe. I don´t know why we still have it, the mobo literally won´t accept any more than 32mb, apparantly the manufacturer couldn´t imagine anyone needing any more than that when it was made. Anyway, they use it for Quickbooks data entry, though it is still pathetically slow even with that being the biggest strain

Almost forgot, we have 2mb graphics cards in almost all of our cyrix´s (us being us people in the office, not the cafe) Although there is at least one that has a 1mb card, the best res it supports is 1024x768 at 256 colors, I have it set to 800x600 at 16bit color

Actually, I have a tendency to not pay attention to names, and I hadn't noticed you already posted the specs. I apologize.

Try running WindowsXP on something like that, and get ready for true pain.

Doesn't really count if it isn't your main anymore.

Just being 'online' my PIII-S 1.4 on a TUV4X motherboard wasn't that much different, if at all from my current A64 3200+ (S939 90nm) on a K8N Neo4/Platinum both had 1GB ram.

Gaming it makes a bit of difference, but I am also running a 6800GTOC now over a Radeon 8500.
