I have a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552U drive and every single time I try to burn something, it fails. I was thinking it may be the media, since I only have a 10 pack of one kind here, but I did some googling and it looks like lot of people are having issues with this drive. I have not found any solutions though.

Just wondering if anyone would happen to have a solution to this, likeupdating firmware or something? I've never updated an optical drive's firmware before... never even knew it could be done.

Thing is, I paid for this, so I expect it to actually work. Not only that, but I have an acrylic case and the only way to unscrew a drive is to remove the motherboard to remove the side panel (all one peice) which is a real PIA. So I'm really hoping I don't have to go out and spend more money.

Oh and the discs I'm using are Ascent DVD+R 4.7GB 4X. On the case it also sas RW on it, which is confusing me since maybe they are RW's? But right below RW it says CD+R?!

Also when it burns, it burns at 2.4X, and nero does not give me any option to change this, not even to a lower value. I don't really like the fact that it's a decimal, that's not really standard, never seen that before. Oh and I'm using nero 6.3.

So any help would be greatly apreciated, thanks!

I think its on slave, the other burner is on master. So should I switch them?

I forgot to mention that I've successfully burnt a video DVD, but only one out of one tried, so I should maybe find some videos that I can burn to test it more.

Oh ok so 2.4 is normal? Interesting never seen decimals before, but I'm rather new to DVD burning as I only got this burner a few months ago - I figured it was time to get up to date with technology.

I have the file and the flash util from samsung and double checked it's the right model. Anyway, is there anything I should know before flashing? I've seen a few topics of people having their PC freeze, trashing the drive, while flashing. Do I just close everything and I should be fine? Or should it be done in safe mode? etc.

Yep looks like upgrading the firmware did in fact work. Mind you I'm basing the results on one burn only, but after the same burn failing 3 times before, I'm pretty confident based on it succeeding even if it's just one burn.

I'll find more stuff to burn and test it more. My mysql DB is like 2GB so that's a good candidate right there, along with 2Gigs of other data which should not be very hard to find.
