I had a $100 Best Buy GC burning a hole in my pocket so I bought a set of Z560s.

I get them home, unpack everything, hook everything up and HUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMM.

The damn subwoofer is humming. It humms with nothing hooked to it.

wtf? I saw alot of people saying they were cheap but damn, broken on day 1?

Should I just get my money back or try a second set?

Try plugging them into a different outlet. Seems like I remember some folks having trouble with the sub hum plugged into a powerstrip or something. Mine is silent. (well untill...)

Swap them!! Although I would not even consider trading my PM 5.1s for those, I'd definately consider trading my PM 4.1s for a set of Z560s. Helped a friend set them up and they sound damn nice.

Did you even go ahead and set up the speakers?

I tried them in several outlets and it hummed in all of them.

I'll exchange them today after work.

I was very leary of these speakers because I have read about tons of people having
problems with them. But. I will give them 1 more try.

I'll let you know how the second set turns out.

When more people buy something(in this case cause they're great speakers for the $), the more have a chance of failure. Exchange them and maybe try them at the store if they let you.

UPDATE.

I exchanged them at Best Buy for a new set.

This set HUMS the moment you turn it on, then the hum fades to the point where
you can only hear the hum if you are a couple feet from it.

Is this normal? Hum like this will work its way into the amplifier and thus into the satellites.

I can tell you that the Klipsch didn't do this.

I am beginning to wonder if people's infatuation with these speakers is their price.

So, Z560 owners, does your sub hum when you are close to it?

Thx.

They hum depending on how your house is wired. in my room, I have a 3 setting torchiere light, and the set hums only when the light is set to position 2, never any other time. Weird stuff, but it can easily be worked around.

Have two sets running on two different systems in two different rooms, neither of them "hum" , but they do shake the house rather nicely

It's probably line noise. You should try hooking up a stereo to that outlet and see if it hums. I would suspect that your line has too much noise

lol...

They are isolated on a circuit by themselves right now. Any circuit I use in the house is the same.

Funny that the "inferior" Klipsch didnt hum nor the elcheapo Altec Lansings I am trying to replace.

Also funny that both sets hummed at different levels.

I guess my house is defective but the Logitechs are A-OKAY...

When it hums do you have the volume pumped up real high? Does it hum on all volume settings? Does it hum without any cord plugging into the line-ins of the speakers? Most if not all speakers will hum without any signal when pumped to higher volumes because the amp is pushing a lot of power to speakers with nothing to project.

Have you opened them up and just checked all the connections and grounding in the subs wiring? You never know something might of come loose.

If it IS electrical noise, why not try a line conditioner or surge protector?

I used to have the SAME ype problem with my KLH 10" Sub that is used in my Home Theatre set up - - - after maybe 6 months it started humming and would not stop; I combed the WEB Sites is search of an answer (NO response fm KLH Tech Support). Anway, you MIGHT want to try what, so far, has solved the HUM for me, I laid it on it's face, took a 1x4" piece of wood, laid it across the Heat dissipating fins, so I would not bend them, then, (used my tool of choice) took a hammer, gave it a couple solid raps, and WALA, whatever was causing it got scared away I guess. Has not hummed like that since, thank God!

Good Luck!
