I'm thinking the 2 512MB drives is a better deal... but there are a lot of USB 2.0 drives hitting the market, I don't even now if that's necessarily hot. 130 x 2 + 5 = $265.00

1 gig at USB 1.1 speeds would be painfully slow, USB 2.0 on the other hand would be fast enough to access things other than documents. You could install some apps, games or CD images run them off the drive.

Very Cool, however it seems to me that a 1GB compact flash would be much more versitile. I have a small usb reader/writer that isn't much bigger than those drives. Also much cheaper

if you noodle around the site you can find a 1GB drive here for only $232.88

They claim to USB 2.0 but the specs list:
Speed: Read 8M bit/sec, Write 6.4M bit/sec (Max)

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that USB 1.x speeds.

man my archos 20 mp3 player was only $350 and it is a portable USB 2.0 hard drive and mp3 player.

I'd go for a 512MB USB 2.0 drive for $120, however I want the cap to stay on EXTREMELY well and I want it so you can put it on a keychain or necklace.

Your Archos like mines also makes whatever pocket it is sagging creating a lean which can only be fixed by putting a brick on the other pocket to balance it out. Good player though

Those are POWERED USB 1.1 speeds. USB 1.1, now known as "USB 2.0 Full Speed" (480MBps is "USB 2.0 High Speed") keydrives usually average around 1MBps write/read. You can't expect full 480MBps performance from a passively-powered device.

But I see where the confusion sets in - USB 1.1's max speed is 12MBps. Though even USB 1.1 keys @ 1MBps are still up to ten times faster than a floppy drive.

Honestly though I don't think these flash drives will take a windows install as there are just too many read/write cycles assosiated with a swap file. I know that Windows installs to CF cards fail due to this over a period of time, and I don't think a flash drive would be any different.

USB 1.1 is 12Mbps, not 12MBps.

Then, IMHO these thumbdrives are still too big to be a keychain and/or too ugly to be hung around the neck... lol

Yes, you can install an OS on these, but make sure u don't put a swap file on it... these drives will only survive ~100,000 write cycles.
