FIL Gets Drunk and Threatens to kill me and kick my ass
I call cops on FIL and he goes home
FIL comes back and starts threatening again.
I call cops on FIL again and he goes home. Copes are going to put a warrant out for his arrest.
Next day FIL claims to not remember a thing and he?s sorry for anything that happened.

Had a pretty crazy experience with my Father-In-Law a few days ago and I?m not sure I handled it correctly.

First we have kind of an odd setup. My Mother-In-Law has heart trouble and my FIL is a over the road truck driver who is not home often. They live across the street from us but, since my MIL has heart problems she has been staying with us so my wife can keep an eye on her. This creates a problem where my FIL think he has free reign over at our house and can come and go as he pleases. This has always aggravated me but I don't say much to just keep the peace.

Saturday around 8:00pm my FIL got extremely drunk over at his house. My Sister-In-Law and him got a in a fight and she ended up leaving and about an hour later my FIL came barging into the house wanting to speak to her. We told him that she left and he starts going off on how everyone treats him like trash and everyone thinks he is stupid. I told him that no one thinks that and no one is treating him like trash and he wants me to step outside to fight. My Wife then steps in and tells him to go home and go to bed that he?s just drunk.

Around 10:00pm my FIL comes back over banging on our front door wanting to speak with our MIL. I told him that he?s not coming inside since he?s drunk and we don't want him around our son. He then goes crazy saying that he?s going to kill me and wants to kick my ass. I then tell him to get off our property or I will call the police. He hit the door a few more times and then went home after I called the police.

Around 10:30pm the police showed up. They seemed to think it is humorous I called them on a 63 year old man that was wanting to fight, but they said they would go try to talk to him and tell him not to come back over. He wouldn?t answer the door for them and my wife did not want to press charges so they left.

Around 12:30am my FIL bangs on the window wanting the keys to my MIL's car which he already had. My Wife told him through the window that she would not give him the keys since he is drunk and could lose his license/job. He then goes off on me calling me a coward and everything else imaginable for calling the cops and wants me to come outside again. This time my wife tells me to call the cops.

Around 1:00am The Police came back and took statements from both of us, they then went to go over and talk to the FIL. Again he would not answer the door and they said that they cannot go in and arrest him over a misdemeanor. They tell us that they will put a warrant out for his arrest.

He did not come back over that night after the Police came a 2nd time. The next morning he calls and wonders why everyone is mad at him and my MIL told him what happened. He claims to not remember a thing and that he?s extremely sorry.

Not really sure what were going to do about him now. My wife is really torn about it since it is her Dad, and he does live right across the street from us. I kind of feel bad about calling the Police on him but I did not want him to break a window or something else stupid. I do not see any point in going out and fighting with him as it would not have solved anything.

Didn't "Everybody Loves Raymond" teach you anything? Never live ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE IN-LAWS!

Every time I read one of these threads on OT I thank God that my MIL was a wonderfully cultured woman who liked me (and I her!) right from the get-go.

Almost from the moment I walked in her door we left the others (SIL, her hubby, even my then bride-to-be) in the dust discussing archaeology, art, history, sociology, politics, and all things English (she was . . . English.) She had just come back from a trip up the Nile.

Everytime she called and got our machine, she would laugh at my message (it enraged my Dad.) I was so, so grateful for her! And her daughter, my late wife Jessie, was a chip right off her block.

OP, it sucks, but you did the right thing. He could potentially shoot you during his next asshole drunken rage and then be all apologetic and forgetful the next day.

Fuck him. Fuck all lowlifes. :|

You chose to correct course of action. Drunk men, related or not, threatening to kill ought to have the cops called on them because they cannot control themselves.

why doesnt your mil go home when her husband is in town? seems like that exacerbates the whole situation to me. and you should have stepped out and dropped him on the lawn the first time. after making sure the wife was as fed up as you were.

I guess my wife's parents raised her to never call the police on family.

Since im the first one in her family to ever do that im probally going to be labeled a black sheep or a panzy or somthing.

She has been sticking by me though and said that I had no choice. I belive she is the only normal person in her entire family.

FIL needs an Intervention.

Yeah OP you did the right thing. And your FIL might be telling the truth about not remembering what he did. Sure sign of an alcoholic who needs help.

I really wish she would. She pretty much hates the man though. The only reason she doesnt get a divorce is because of his health insurance.

What does she think is going to happen to her health insurance when he kills himself on a bender?

She needs to get out and take care of herself. It won't be easy, just a different kind of difficult than she has now.

What good will that do? If I kicked his ass and hurt him bad enough I could wind up in jail instead of him.

Then more then likely he would go speak to his two crazy sons and tell them some story of how I picked a fight with him and beat him up. Then they would be wanting to kick my ass too

You handled it right. I don't understand why you're second-guessing yourself. Were it me, his threats would meet the acquaintance of my S&W .40 cal M&P and I'd have told him to get the off my property before I blew his brains out.

You don't threaten a man or his family in his house or at his door. Period. I don't care if Jesus Christ made manifest in the flesh is beating on my door, that fucker is going down.

is this a reoccurring event? if not, I would let it slide (so long as the apology is sincere).

He has never really like me for some reason but this is the first time he has gotten violent like this.

I really don't know if his apology is sincere because I really don't know if I belive him that he doesnt remember anything. I know with being that drunk that it is possible but he says he remembers hiding from the cops, just not about what they were there for.

I'd say give him a chance to show his apology is sincere. Give him a chance to turn the drinking around and if he is really sorry he will try. This may be the wake up call he needs.
