Burning hot embers flying through the air. They land somewhere else that is really dry and start a fire.

It's all just a matter of time until everyone flees to the great lakes.
Come to papa. I've got land.

Blame the smokers who throw their LIT cigarette butts out their window on a highway lined with dry brush.

The new guy in my old department (started in when I left on Oct. 1st) lost his house this morning. Probably a few others did as well. Anyone could go home today and claim authorized leave, I did a half day and then came home at lunch. I'm pretty sure tomorrow will be authorized leave as well.

During the big fire in 2003, I went to bed with no worries because the fires were 15-20 miles away. My roommate woke me up and told me that the emergency message on the TV was a one hour evacuation warning, and the fire was a mile from my house. I packed what I could, and checked the news before bolting the door- the wind had changed direction, and my neighborhood was saved. I was going to have to stay at my old roommates, and my ex-gf was staying there too. Wheh! Close call both ways lol.

about 12 miles away from us. not too worried yet. air is very bad though..stuck inside. work is in rancho bernardo. we're going into emergency procedures right now for business continuity, making sure data is safeguarded. really don't want to be working right now.

It's within miles of my house, we had to evacuate. I have multiple friends who lost their houses and possessions and one that lost a dog :\

Del Mar has been put under voluntary evac...getting ready to evac soon to Qualcom stadium. Hopefully we're not put under mandatory. We're waiting for mandatory, with everything packed. Hope it doesn't come to that.

Parents house is probably 35-40mi away. I was there last night, and it smelled like a goddamn campfire. I wouldn't be surprised if the streets were lined with ash right now.

I've been readig reports that most of the fires are arson. So no, this has nothing to do with "OMG ENVIRONMENT LOL" since the fires aren't even natural anyway.

It's not just forests that are burning, it's neighborhoods nowhere near forests. And don't forget all of the super dry grass.

I wouldn't describe any of them as "super fires" either, it's mostly fairly typical California wildfires. The southern part of the state dries up, allowing fires to spread more easily. The southern half of the state has big fires every year...

I live on the UCI campus, luckily the fires are all pretty far away from here. The fire near the marine corps air station might reach us eventually if it's really out of control, but I doubt it.

Yup....California (both north and south) is HUGE in tech on a worldwide scale, so it's not surprising that of the plethora of geeks on ATOT so many are affected by this, including myself.

EDIT: and what does it take for a mod to sticky a thread anyway? At least sticky one so that those in southern cali will see it and have a chance to let us know they're okay.

It took me 6-7 tries to dial my dad just 10 minutes ago....I'm betting that it's gonna be harder to get through tonight, and I'm only in Northern Cali......people on the other coast must be having a harder time getting through to check on their loved ones.
