The Orange County fire would have to jump the freeway to really get into the heart of Irvine. Like Petunz said, the homes in the OC that are threatened are build up in the hills surrounded by shrubs/weeds.

Is the RSF flank of Witch fire moving northwest? Is Del Mar and Carmel Valley all right for now?

Wow... wow... I can see fires atop the mountaintops now, albeit, still a few miles away.

so did these all start in the wild or was someone responsible for this?

The Orange County fire is arson. I hear at least 3 of the fires were arson, according to the news.

Makes you wonder if it wasn't someone that was facing foreclosures and just wanted insurance money.

Arsonists should be shot. Period.

After we got the City Mand Evac, we hesitated--it is our house. We got the sprinkler turned on, I sprayed the areas susceptible to harboring those damned embers, and I went over across to my friend's house, and he has a view of I-5 and the lagoon&canyon and he's on a hill (so are we, but you could not tell and we dont have the view). So we're looking out for sparks & embers flying across the freeway and setting fire to the brush in the lagoon and spreading up the hill. The FD were busy fighting blazes 7 miles east, and we could see the blazes. We used my friend's night vision goggles (outlines humans and animals in light and/or heat) to pick up the intensity of the heat signals. We were also watching TV to see wtf was going on. The blazes got bigger, then died down, then got bigger, and then finally, the whole area was wreathed in smoke...it was impossible to pick up any concentrated heat signal in that area. Soon after, the night vision broke down. Around 12:43, police with sirens came down the street with mics telling us about the emergency evac. My friend did not go, because he did not want to go, and we saw that it was really an evac from the smoke--and the city trying to cover its tail (my friend had air conditioning, so it wasn't a problem for us--my house doesn't). So we stayed, preparing, praying, hoping. My parents called saying that we were going to Long Beach because of the damned smokey smell. The sky was pretty clear, the moon shone out brightly, it was not veiled in a bloody light as it had been on Sunday. And there were even stars in the sky...so we did have hope. Also there was no wind, it was dead in the air.

So we went to long beach at around 12:50, the police came by again, urging peeps to leave (they can't make you leave, and many people didn't), we said good luck to our house, took my tooth brush, and away we went. Had a sweet breakfast this morning, heard from my friend no fire at all nearby, very little wind. Fire was devastating other parts of San Diego, but not mine. Very lucky.

Went to the Getty Museum, stared at all the nudes of course, and then the evac got lifted around 3:45 I think, we went home.

The End??????

(I hope so)

If you would like to (and are able to) help out the firefighters injured in these fires please consider donating to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. The WFF assists injured wildland firefighters and the families of injured/killed firefighters.

Sadly, this is true. I work about a couple blocks from the Spectrum. Yesterday when it was nearly unbearable and costco workers along with others were around wearing painter masks, I was up at work still working since the partners thought it was more important for us to be at work, even though there was smoke and ash in the office and it was hurting our throats/noses/eyes.

Several places were let out because of this, however we weren't. Business as usual indeed

At least things seemed to have gotten a little better, although, I hear it's getting closer...?

My house is in Poway so we had to evacuate early yesterday morning. We left a little before the mandatory evacuation period because tree limbs were starting to fall and block the roads and some trees were even uprooted completely, some actually leaning against phone lines. It was virtually impossible to breathe at that point as well. My family also has two large dogs, one 90 pounds and one 200 pounds so it's a big deal to move them.

We went to a friend's house of ours in lakeside but we eventually had to evacuate there too. Now we're staying in a hotel in downtown San Diego.

It appears that our house is still standing. We live over by Poway lake. About a quarter mile away from our house, 12 houses burned down in the neighboring gated community, and a friend house up the street lost their deck from the fire as well. A huge picture of it was actually in the LA times.

So we've been pretty lucky. It looks like somewhere around 85 homes have burned down in Poway and a few hundred have burned down in RB. Such a disaster...

Hope everyone else here in the socal area is ok!

On 20/20 tonight they said these "Super Fires" in the western US have grown so widespread every year that they have lost the ability to stop them, and they are burning so hot that the forests they are destroying won't grow back for several centuries. They made it seem like in the next 20 years the entire western half of the US will be transformed into some eerie Mad Max scenario.

Glad I live on the east coast.

The reason why Super Fires exist are because we've been suppressing fires for a LONG time. Ironic huh? Basically, fires are supposed to happen, but with our 'OMG ENVIROMENT LOL" attitude, we basically stopped a lot of natural fires from happening. Thus, too much overgrowth, and BOOM, we get super fires that we can't stop and sterilizes the area.

It has nothing to do with "OMG ENVIRONMENT LOL". For a LONG time we have known that fires are supposed to happen and part of the natural ecology of much of the west. The problem was people who wanted to exploit the resources (like Gifford Pinchot), not preservationists. You can't sell a burnt log. Learn your history

I can't believe that anyone believes any of the BS in all 3 of these posts.

This is desert scrub land on fire, not mismanaged forests. Take it to P&N.

For anyone that lives in the Laguna Beach/Laguna Niguel area:

Is there a fire going on in that area now too? Last night, around midnight, I saw some flames shooting up in the Pacific Park area (driving on Aliso Creek Rd near the 73 toll road). Am I going fire crazy or did I actually see it?

This morning, I saw a ton of smoke in the area, but my coworkers didn't see anything.

Can anyone confirm?

That was updated an hour again, and Rancho Santa Fe is getting too close for comfort. I wonder if the fire dept is actually doing anything atm.

And for all peeps saying this and that: Yeah, no kidding it's not forests, its scrub and brush, very dry, and susceptible to burning. Answer: Have controlled fires. And add a death penalty for arson which is really domestic terrorism. Period.
