i came looking for advice on a possible similar situation. I didn't need to hear 'you lose, pay the bill" 40 times.

because you *are* wrong. the only thing you can do here is throw yourself on the mercy of your landlord.

to which he will probably give you the finger...

What do you expect people to say other than the truth? If you still think that your landlord is legally responsible for this, then you still haven't heard it enough times. The only other piece of relevant advice came in the first few posts. You ask your landlords if they will foot some of the bill and hope that they agree. If they don't, there's no way you can force them too.

That's it.... there's nothing more to say. Yet you continue to argue with people as if you can change reality.

Technically you used 172 bucks worth of water. It wasn't the landlord's fault unless you notified them about the problem before hand.

i agree. as a tenant u have a duty to make the landlord aware of problems first.

i'm not arguing. i'm telling you what reality is. i've had experience before (leaky toilet, wasn't aware of it so couldn't notify landlord, blah blah, ultimately the landlord shared the bill when we asked nicely, but that was a good management company and we were friendly with the office girls). obviously, you haven't, which is why you continue to whine.

Have you tried talking to the city?

They are working with me after my huge water leak.

They just needed documentation of repair work (receipts, ect.)

Ok, the way I see it coming into this thread is the OP is looking for a way out. Not OP's fault, but not landlord's fault. Why should landlord have to pay instead of OP when its as much the landlord's fault when its the OP's fault.

OP woulda gotten sympathy if he wasn't being such a dick and trying to push the bill on a party that was in no way responsible for the bill.

In the end, OP == dick and is a reason why when I ever have a rental property, will not rent to college students who never think anything is their fault and everyone is out to screw them.

Yeah, the repairman thought he fixed it. You never heard the water running and never reported otherwise, so how is the landlord suppose to know anything about it?

I know it sucks, but that's life.

The land lord should pay because it was the land lords crapper that was the cause. Now getting him to pay is going to be impossible but good luck.

Maybe you should have your mommy move in with you so that she can inspect your apartment instead of you. It's a fact of life that things we use every day will wear out occasionally. Things need repair, and not on a set schedule, so expecting the landlord to catch it before you do is absurd. Water heaters can stop working or leak, faucet handles can come off, toilets can run, furnaces can break, and if you can't be responsible enough to notice and report problems, then maybe you aren't ready to live on your own yet.

Fix it yourself. Calling a plumber to fix a toilet is ludicrous when 10 minutes and the right parts will solve water leakage better than most repairmen ever could - cheaper to boot.

If they had fixed it before you left, you would have a decent chance of having your landlord help out on the bill, if it started to run again after you left for break. That it was running before you ever left on break and you never turned it in makes it all your fault. Consider it a learning experience. If a toilet is running, it's not operating properly and needs to be repaired or adjusted.

If you normally pay for utilities why the hell would the landlord pay.

If the landlord normally pays this utility bill, why the hell would you care how much it was.

I have rental properties. If were my property I would foot the balance of the bill not normally used by the tenant.
The problem was reported to the landlord at least twice, and fixed at least once. The responsibility to have fully working fixtures in the rental unit will fall on the landlord, as well as all damages and expenses incurred.

If this was taken to court, the tenant would most likely win.

It wasn't reported until it had been going on for a couple months. It was even running abnormally before he went on vacation and he didn't tell the landlord. The bill went out of control because of that. You're a very nice landlord if you'd put up with that.

but i will still be a whiney b*tch to you all knowing atoters, so whatever. Its a battle that cannot be won. I should have seen it comming, any argument with faceless people immediately turns into "no you are wrong because we know more than you". iiiii lovvveee e-arguments.
