Im connected to my College internet on my main computer. On that computer i have videos that i ripped to my HDD.

I also have a Laptop (Tablet PC). I would like to stream those files over a network. I have a second NIC on the back of my desktop, so i ran a standard Ethernet cord from one to the other. I made both computers under the same workgroup.

I still cant get it to see the other computer. Is there something that i am doing wrong, or is this even possible.

THanks,
-Kevin

There is a Networking forum. However this is a simple answer: you need a crossover Ethernet cable. A standard cable results in the "send" pins on one computer being connected to the "send" pins on the other, and the "receive" pins on each side being linked, so it's like two cars driving in opposite directions in the same lane. Neither PC can receive anything from the other.

Alternatively you can use a cheap Ethernet hub. If your school lets you connect more than one computer to the LAN, you could use that to put the laptop online at the same time as the desktop as well, though you would not want to be running File and Printer Sharing over the connection then.

exactlly what Lord Evermore said. to coonect to PC's without a switch, hub or router, you're going to need a crossover ethernet cable.

hmm if that PC is new at all most onboard NICs are smart enough to not matter what kind of cable it is. I know I doesn't when I use a plain patch cable to connect two PC's with my NF4 motherboard.
Are you "sharing" out your internet connection? in the NIC settings?

Hi, The Lord is correct as usual. Compare the connectors on a cable. Held the same way a straight thru cables wire colors are lined up the same. Crossed cable wires do not line up the same. Shades of Serial communication of the past. I solved that one with a switch and two leds. When both leds were lit the send and receives were correct.
