To add a bit more value the Zen Micro in the title also comes with a free cradle and belt clip. Also the shipping is $8.60 for me (shipping is $4.99 for orders between $50 and $99.99 and free for anything above). Just wanted to clarify that. It still is a hot deal despite that and I just put in my order. Thx MadScientist.

Good. Last time I bought a 4GB for $60, it turned out to be DOA. Creative sent me a new 8GB version for RMA. That's why I like Creative.

What's the deal with these and Vista? I think the old firmware/drivers didn't work with Vista, but I have read that you can upgrade the firmware (via a non-Vista machine) and get around that. Anyone try that?

Why bother? It's plug and play. Just use windows explorer.

I think what he's saying is that Vista won't even recognize it natively, meaning you won't see it in Windows explorer. There are problems out there with Creative and Vista. just google and you will see them, and Vista won't even see the device without the firmware upgrade. Here's one, different model but a problem nonetheless. Vista and Zen micro
Here's another for Zen Vision M
It needs to up firmware upgraded on an XP OS then it will work in Vista

On a slightly different but similar subject with Vista, I have a 6GB Western Digital Pocket drive. Got it cheap. 10.00 at Buy.com after google check out. Now the drive works fine in XP but it will not work with Vista, no matter what. The website specs doesn't say it works with Vista either. The firmware for this little drive was made for XP and not Vista. It doesn't not work natively in Vista.

Anybody have any experience with their portable speakers? Specifically the Travelsound and the Travelsound 200. Thanks.

I just now got around to trying these out and one doesn't work! Joy. I swapped batteries to see if that was the problem and no dice.

Has anyone else had a bad experience with these little buggers?

For those who are adventurous, here's a tutorial on how to convert you zen micro or zen micro photo into a 16GB Flash player for about 60 bucks.

Any mp3 player that doesn't have a removable storage slot is a waste of money IMO. My 6 year old Rio S30S is much better than any of these, short of the Vision M simply because the sound is just as good, and the storage capacity is only limited by the size of the SD Card... All those extra bells and whistles like the colorful interface and the movie playback is just a way to suck your money out of ya. Nine times out of 10, you'll end up not watching movies on your mp3 player.

I got the 60Gb iPod Video about 2 years ago, and I really regret it, because I wasted $400 for a frigging toy. I was very attracted to it because of the video capability, and the large hard drive, but if the hard drive wont limit how long you will watch movies, the battery certainly will - the video is more of a gimmick than a useful feature. Why bother at all then? As for the mp3 playing ability and the insane amount of storage - just about any other mp3 player will play back mp3s just as well, and no human being will listen to more mp3s than about 2-3gigs worth in the time it will take for the battery to die on ya. Either way you'll have to go home and recharge, and while you do that you might as well upload some more songs instead of keeping your whole collection on the player. It's only going to take you around 2-5 minutes anyway. I should have kept my $400 and kept using my cheap old Rio, which aside from having a removable storage slot also uses a single AAA battery, so when using high capacity rechargeable AAAs, this thing will run all day non stop. The Rio S30S can be had on ebay for 5-10 bucks these days!

***Again, all this is purely IMO. I wrote this because I was in the bad mood, and because I wanted to keep people from wasting their money. The rest is up to you.

Thanx. An interesting read, but for a little more than $60 plus the ptice of the player, a 60Gb used iPod video in good condition can be had on ebay.

ibex333,
Thanks for the zen like advice (pun unintended), but that's the nature of the beast isn't it. I mean, you have a gazillion mp3 players to choose from and they lose value faster than a loaf of bread sitting on a supermarket shelf for a week, so choosing one is extremely difficult. Like you, I must have bought more than a dozen or so over the years ranging from cheapie assembled with duct tape no-name ones to an Iphone and, in the end, I've settled on a Creative Zen V Plus 8GB. I am not a big fan of watching stick like creatures moving around on a 2.5" screen either but there are many others who don't mind, else companies won't be churning out video players in such large quantities. So different strokes for different folks.

The project that I mentioned is aimed at the geek in some of us (I am waiting for the CF drive to arrive to attempt it), not so much at those who want to save money. BTW, I've lost too much data over the years to hard drives to recommend anything used that's got one in it (I know, I know, I should have backed it up first).
