I remember we had a thread about 6 months ago that was pretty lengthy and listed all the good credit cards out there and what benefits they came with. I was wondering if we could have another one. We all know that AMEX Blue is good because of it's pricematching capabilities, but I know that I, along with others, don't have enough established credit to qualify for this card (college student). So which other credit cards are good and have good benefits? cash rewards, frequent flyer miles, discounts, etc. If this thread doesn't seem appropriate for Hot Deals, feel free to lock it. I think it'll be pretty beneficial though.

I have a Citibank Sony card--u get sony points for each dollar spent--the usual.
Besides citibank being a really strong company/bank, ive already cashed in some of my points for discounts on sony products with no problems whatsoever.
No annual fee. Online accounts. yada

I prefer cash-back type cards over points/air miles because you're not
locked into using the reward on a specific thing (e.g. Sony points on the Citibank
Sony MC can only be redeemed on Sony products)

AznRyda actually you missed another AmexBlue benefit and that is online security with their one time usage numbers. Very very cool.

I seem to recall some students on this forum stating that they did in fact had a _student_ AmEx blue. So you might wanna look into that.

www.amazon.com has a visa that gives 2% of all purchases towards a gift certificate to amazon.com and you get 5% with purchases from amazon.com

citibank has a 1% dividend platinum visa 1% cash back.

-You get 3 points for every dollar purchased at amazon, and 1 point everywhere else. You can redeem 2500 points for a $25 dollar amazon.com gift certificate. (This used to be a better deal)

Amex cash rebate card comes in second..

there is no annual fee for both card.

For Juniper cash rebate mastercard
0.25% .....on the first $1 of purchases
0.50% .....from $1,000 and up
1.00% .....from $2000 and up
2.00% .....from $10000 and up

Spend $12,000/year = $135 cash rebate
Spend $24,000/year = $375 cash rebate
Spend $30,250/year = $500 cash rebate

For Amex Cash rebate
$12,000/year = $125 rebate
$24,000/year = $305 rebate
$36,000/year = $485 rebate
(do remember, more places accepts VISA/MC than AMEX, so I think juniper is much better)

ergh, I don't know what happened to my post, but I'll re-type it.

Anyways, if you had a card with cash benefits, then you could purchase bonds from the government at a fairly decent rate. Savings Bonds Here Not only would you get interest on your money, you would get added benefits from your credit card company.

There was a lot of talk on the slimwallet forums about this. If you bought bonds at the end of the month, kept it for a while, and cashed them in at the beginning of the 6th month, you would get a pretty good return on your investment and it would be really secure and safe.

in my opinion, you should get the netbank (firstusa) 5% cash back card at select merchants including amazon, outpost.
no tiered gimmick.

i use it for all amazon purchases that i won't use PM. saved me hundreds already.

My brother has that card. I think it's issued by NextCard. it's only useful if you shop at amazon.com a lot. In my opinion, Amazon.com is quite expensive.

no the card I am talking about is from first usa. nextcard give you points, not cash back. and i think nextcard's CS sucks.

BTW, amazon has good deals from time to time.

It seems like most of the time the better the deal ("5% Back" or the GM Card) either charge you an annual fee and/or a high interest rate. If you keep a balance (like most people do) it's just not worth it.

I have the Blue for pricematching (hope they never stop that!) plus I have two Platinum cards (Fleet and FirstUSA) that are low interest and no annual fee. In the long run it works out better for me...YMMV
