i have a regular citibank card at 10.9% with no annual...is that good according to the times? The feds droppped the rates a few times recently but citibank would not drop my rate any.

Credit cards have one of the highest rates as a whole. While 10.9 is nothing terrible for a credit card, it would be bad for a home equity loan or other types of loans. It is best to never pay interest on a credit card if you can.

<< no the card I am talking about is from first usa. nextcard give you points, not cash back. and i think nextcard's CS sucks.

BTW, amazon has good deals from time to time.
>>

Money that only works at certain retailers is just "points." It hardly matters what you call it, but I don't think 5% for etailers is too bad as far as benefits go.

Link Here.

And also, if you don't have any credit, when you turn 18, it's a good idea to get a credit card with no annual fee and make small monthy purchases and pay them completely off each month.

AznRyda:

I am a college student too, and i both have amex blue and amex blue for students.
did you apply already? if not try at least for amex blue for students.
then once you get it, call amex up and tell them you want to apply for amex blue (regular) since you already have a account with amex, you have a better chance getting approved (CSR said, if you already have one AMEX card, it's easier to get approved for another)

the difference between regular blue and the one for students is the amex blue for students because you don't get pricematching, BUT you get better deals on airfare.

It seems like most of the time the better the deal ("5% Back" or the GM Card) either charge you an annual fee and/or a high interest rate. If you keep a balance (like most people do) it's just not worth it.

which is why you get more than one card -- get a card with low interest (can even get 0% if you keep transfering every 6 mos for a new intro rate), and another card for purchases (aqn pay that off every month, or at least transfer bals out of that regularly, if you are that bad off) I have a LOT of cash I am "accumulating" interest at a 0% rate right now

fyi the GM card does NOT charge an annual fee. although the "new GM car" that they have been offering is not nearly as good as the old one (which you can't get a new one of as of two years ago or so, only those who had it before then and did not convert). the new gm card lets you accumulate much quicker, but then you are capped on how much you can user towards each model. e.g. the chevy prism I bought last year, if I had the new GM card I would have been capped at using less than one third of the $3600 I was able to take off the price.

Hi, I have AMEX Blue (regular) and I'm a college student as well. What do you mean better deals on airfare?

Also, AMEX blue's web interface completely SUCKS. That's where Discover Card's interface RULES. I use that card as much as possible, plus it's a platinum

I have a CitiBank card with 1% cash back but beware. I recently made a purchase with Vikingscomputer.net who scammed everybody with the motherboard(ECS KS5A + XP1600) combo deal and am now having a lot of difficulty with Citi disputing that charge. The CC company conveniently placed the burden on me when they couldn't get in contact with the merchant by rebilling my statement. I am still fighting with Citi to get them to investigate Vikingscomputer.net.

That's another thing. Discover Card is THE BEST when it comes to disputing fraudulant charges. I have NEVER had a problem.

Also, I have a Bank of America GOLD card.. I get 1% cash back (with out carrying a balance) and also I get rewards on Air Miles.

Its strange that someone is having problems with citibank. The reason I have been with them so long is because they have been excelent in every aspect of there service. I had someone get my CC # and they caught it after the first instance(3 charges of aprox $200 and did not have to pay them). They were also speedy when it came to replacing lost cards.

Can someone tell me if 9.9% is common for a visa/mc??? thanks

Yeah Citibank is great. I'm gonna be so when my ClickCiti card
expires. They stopped taking applications but are honoring it until
2003. No mag-strip so only good online/catalog.. But has 1% cash back
applied as credit on your next month's statement, Best Value Guarantee
and Buyer Protection (double warranty up to 1 year) and great online
interface. Nothing but good things to say about them. The Dividends
Card is good too, but for the 1% cashback, you have to wait until you
accumulate $100 before they send the check. I use that for mostly gas and groceries mostly, and the sporatic B&M hot deal purchase

Going to have to make the move to Amex Blue soon. Great thread!

Caution: read the "fine print". This not only applies to any "contract", but especially to CC's.

Why you ask ?

A little background.

I had an AT&T Universal CC for some time; the division was sold to CitiBank, who decided to change several important terms, one of which was the following.

One of the "new clauses" adopted in ~ July - August 2001 is: if you fail to make a payment to AT&T Universal or ANY OTHER creditor when due,
your interest rate automatically increases to something like 21% or close thereto.

What one does with another creditor is none of AT&T's [Citibank's] business, so I cancelled my card.

You may not care, but it's your choice.

That's my opinion. period.

<< AznRyda actually you missed another AmexBlue benefit and that is online security with their one time usage numbers. Very very cool.

I seem to recall some students on this forum stating that they did in fact had a _student_ AmEx blue. So you might wanna look into that.

Happy Hollidays!!!

My Mastercard is through my credit union. Low rate, no annual fee, pleny of time to pay before interest is charged, and I pay it off every month anyway. As far as I can tell this beats the cashback things, if you have to make $10,000 of purchases to earnback the $60 annual fee. If anyone knows otherwise, let me know.

I also have an amex blue for the private payments (individual cardnumber every time you purchase) but their site IS slow and kind of a pain when getting the number (opens a window that stays on top in your browser, etc). Also the numbers they give you are often good for 45 or more days, rather than one day, and you can't set the credit limit on them, so there is still a chance someone will grab it from the online company you're purchasing from and cause you a huge hassle for a month. Still, beats giving out my main Mastercard number.

I also have an AT&T card, which I keep only for emergencies (say I lose my job). My theory is with $30,000 of total credit lines on the 3 cards, our family can last for several months worst comes to worst.

AuctionHugh,

There is no annual fee for the juniper cash rebate card and american express cash rebate card. The Juniper card is a mastercard, and you start earning 1% as soon as you reach $2000, and you will begin to earn 2% when you have reached $10,000.

The Juniper rebate card really pays off once your spending reaches that 2% tier. Try to get additional cards for your family and if all of you together can spend total $20000-$30000 in a year, your cash rebate is like $300-$500! That's not bad at all.

Just use the cash rebate calculator to figure out how much you can earn.

Yup, you pretty much described my set of credit cards. I got the ClickCiti, the Dividends card, both from Citibank, as well as AMEX Blue. Do you know if they ever reset the amount accrued on the Dividends card? I find myself using my AMEX Blue more often these days, just cuz that card is so damn cool. (Plus the female cashiers seem to like that it's clear. )

In my experience, DiscoverCard has lousy customer service.

You dont get 1% until you have already spent like $1000
Until then, you only get like .25% .

Discover spams you with blank checks (which can be intercepted by misdeliveries).
Discover spams you with phone calls at inconvienent times.

It was still worth signing up though, $35 is better than nothing.

I just received an ad for Citi Diamond Preferred. It has "points" (less than 1% back) and it also has a "price protection program". This price protection has restrictions and exclusions (details provided _after_ you join).

Does anybody have experience with this card? How good is the price protection (e.g., compared to AMEX blue)? Maybe I should try to get both and max out on the Best Value Guarantee and Price Protection

here are my credit cards and the way I use them:

Click Citi from citibank: for online only, has better price guarantee than Blue, 1% cash back, i use this card the most.
Amex Blue: online and offline, use it for offline purchases that need PM, as well as some online purchases
Dividend card from citibank: 1% cash back for all purchases, must accumulate $100 to get the check, use it for offline purchases that do not need PM.
FirstUSA/Netbank smart VISA: 5% cash back at select merchants such as Outpost and Amazon. use it for purchases at Amazon, outpost that do not need PM.

This way I maximize my saving.

I find bankrates.com to be terrificly inaccurate and out of date as far as credit card rates go.

Personally, I like my capital one card. It has a nice 9.9% rate. There are better rates out there due to the bad economy. I've also heard that credit unions are a good place to get a good rate.

Here's an idea...try it; it worked for me.

If you have a card for awhile and have a good payment history, call the issuer, they may reduce the interest rate, especially if it's more than 18%. If they ask why you're asking for a lower rate, tell them (without hesitation) the Prime Rate is low and so is the Fed Discount Rate...for the exact numbers go to a financial website and get them.

Don't be afraid to ask; CC companies know customers easily jump ship to a lower rate card if they can find one; your CC issuer might think twice cause it's easier to keep you (and most likely less expensive for them than getting a new customer).

Try it...you have nothing to lose except interest !

Credit cards, gotta love em.

I'm thinking serisiously about buying an $8000 KTM 520 with a 0% apr credit card and transfering the balance to another 0% apr card in six months. Anyone do this before with this much money? Any problems? Thinking I'd start with the First USA Plat card or the Juniper.

Tanks!

Actually it's only 1% once you hit $3k. .25%, .5%, .75% on the first, second, third $1k.

<< Discover spams you with blank checks (which can be intercepted by misdeliveries). >>

So do most other credit cards.

<< Discover spams you with phone calls at inconvienent times. >>

Not me. And I believe you can tell them to take you off their list.
