<< It's been a while since I've had a car loan, but don't banks want the check made payable to the auto dealership to make sure you're using it for a car? And don't they also insist that their name be put on your car title as a leinholder in case you decide to sell said car without telling the bank?

Bill
>>

Yes if they were buying the car from the dealership but they're not, they're buying it directly from you. Once you pay the dealership with a cc (they don't care how they get paid as long as they get paid), you're the sole owner on the title. You sign a contract with the bank regarding the amount, rate, terms & conditions but you also sign that you authorize them to place theirselves as a lien holder against your car. Remember your bank is buying the car directly from you since you are the owner. The dealership has nothing to do with it.

Update on the amex blue for students
Unfortunately the customer service rep that i talked to was mistaken about the blue for student BVG. Only blue has BVG.
Amex, however has EXCELLENT customer service. They allowed me to upgrade to a normal blue card.
Regardless of whether or not they will upgrade you, I definitely recommend them becuase their customer service is head and shoulders above any other credit card that I have had.

romec: How did you upgrade to the regular blue? I called the CS at amex and they had no clue how to do that. They wanted me to submit a whole new application. I thought that it would be easier than that, since they already have my info.

I think that is what they're saying. This turned into a credit card thread for people who have credit already. Not for college students like me who spend tons through their check card and don't have credit yet.

Aren't there several credit card issuers out there that target college students for special MC/Visa? Many years ago :-( when I was in college, there was no such thing, and I had to build up my credit rating by getting department store and gas company credit cards. They were more likely to give you a card because they could easily cut you off if you weren't paying, and also they wanted you to have the card to shop at their store/station more often. Of course now many stores have store cards which actually are a MasterCard, so I don't know how that would work, I assume you have to be clear that you want the store-only version. Once you get your first credit card, use it responsibly. Don't max out the credit limit and absolutely do not start paying just the minimum - and pay promptly, like as soon as you get the bill. I would personally say you should pay the full amount due, because it is a good practice to get into. I don't know that the banks care whether you carry a balance or not so long as you pay by the due date.

So with that Juniper card how long does it take for a charge to show up online? That's my biggest problem with these online account statements - if it takes three days for the charge to show up then what's the freaking point? Hopefully Juniper is faster...

F.Y.I. I was rejected for the Juniper Mastercard! I requested my credit report and nothing bad on it so I called Juniper to see why I was rejected. Apparently Juniper requires at least three existing credit cards for new Juniper accounts (or at least that's what they told me). I told CSR that I put everything on my current credit card, but they still required the three open credit cards. Go figure. So I guess I'll have to open a couple new credit cards and then re-apply in a few months.

I'm sorry to hear that you were declined but thank you for helping your fellow Anandtechers with this useful information. I have a Sears store card open, 1 VISA from CitiBank and 1 MasterCard from my bank. I wonder if the Sears would qualify as an "open cc" to them or do they want a "convential credit card"?

Do you have the toll free number you called to ask questions about Junipers credit criteria? If so, please post it here, thanks!

i'd like to know too...i've talked to about 10 reps in about 5 different depts, trying to "upgrade" my existing blue for students, but i ultimately had to submit a "phone application." now, it turns out that they can't verify my address (at the dorms) and i have to submit a bank statement or something...it's really been a bother, and i'm perfectly happy using my citibank sony, but i guess it's good to have BVG on hand if i need it...

Hmmmm, I didn't have to give them any additional information to get my card upgraded. I'm not sure what they require for upgrades, but perhaps they were accomodating to me because one of their reps had given me incorrect information about the blue for students card.

Umbrellabank.com card gives you points to buy a ticket. When the ticket is bought, it's just like a normal ticket, so you GET MILES from the flight.....you are limited to their travel agency's inventory. In most cases, it shouldn't be much of a problem to get a ticket.
==============================
The cards I recommend for miles that are widely regarded as the best by people in the know are:

(1.) MBNA Amtrak MAstercard (Free): You can convert points to miles on a 1:1 basis with United and Continental. Also can use points at a lesser rate with hotels and retailers.

(2.) AMEX Starwood Preferred Guest ($30/yr): THE BEST CARD! You can redeem miles on a 1:1 basis on 30 airlines (POINTS NEVER EXPIRE)! They give you 5,000 bonus miles EVERY time you transfer 20,000 points to an airline on their list. Card has a 60 day best price match guarantee--you'll receive the difference of your purchased product if you find it at a lower price within 60 days. You can also use points at hotels in the Starwood chain (NO blackouts)--one of the most extensive & exclusive hotel chains in the world.

=======With an AMEX & MAstercard in your wallet, you're covered for any contigency===

P.S. The Umbrella Visa isn't a bad card either. You just have to use the points every 5 years or risk losing them. Since they buy the ticket for you (you really have no choice in the airline--they'll book you on IRANIAN AIR if that's the cheapest flight flying to Karachi), you get miles on the flight--a bi-coastal flight will net you about 5,000 miles for 25,000 points spent.

P.S.S. Farm Bureau Visa is good because after $35,000 spent within the expiration date of 3 years, you get a check in the amount of 2% for that $35k (that means you have to spend $972 a month on the card to get 2%--any amount under that and you get substantially less than 2%--it then becomes a ripoff). 2% is a standard Mileage card rate for $1/1 mile spent--but these guys give you CASH! You can get a cheaper ticket on the net and pocket the difference from that 2% redeemed or buy anything else!
Redeem: Receieve:
5000 $25 (.5 %)
10000 $75 (.75%)
15000 $150 (1%)
25000 $375 (1.5%)
35000 $700 (2%)

====================================================================
====================================================================
In my opinion, airline card miles are the most valuable if you know how to take advantage of them. Example: I redeemed a trip recently to Europe on American. Like with most airlines, American allows to stop in ONE city (for weeks at a time if you wish) on your way to your destination. So technically you can stop in Paris for a week on your way to Madrid. Then on you way back, you can take off from Barcelona or Milan, stay a week in London on your way back to the US. Such a ticket if purchased would run at least $2000 in winter (During American holidays)--in summer it would run around $3000. I redeemed 40,000 points from AMEX Starwood. Since you get a bonus 5,000 miles for any amount over 25,000 points, my TOTAL out-of-pocket redemption is 35,000 points. So take $2,000/35000= 5.7%................even if you manageto get a ticket less than $2,000, MOST LIKELEY you'll STILL end up with a PERCENTAGE higher than FARM Bureau's 2%....(Plus with AMEX you don't have the pressure to spend $972/mo average to get you 2%!)

=====================================================================
=====================================================================

By the way, regarding dining programs, you can link ANY Visa, MC, AMEX with ANY airline that has a dining program. Example: My Starwood AMEX is with American. My MC is with United. My amazon Visa is with Continental. On business trips, choose a resataurant on the list to take clients out and then pay with your card...you can rack up thousands of miles in a couple of months like yours truly. Visit Mileageworkshop.com for more details.

Dining Programs:
United: 800-555-5116
America West: 877-272-8355
Alaska Air: 800-654-5669
American: 800-479-5981
Delta: 800-818-8339
Northwest: 800-818-2040.
US Air: 800-243-2157
British Air: 800-869-2957 mention code: "d738"

Are you complaining that transactions take 3 days to show up after you make them, or that you don't see your statement online until 3 days after it has closed? The former is not your bank's problem, per se. Unlike with bank account transactions, credit cards transactions do not show up in your account until they get posted. This can take from 1-3 days after the transaction is made. If it hasn't posted and your bill has not been cut, it should not show up on your statement (although I personally always felt that Discover did some sneaky stuff and help your statement until stuff bought at the end of the billing period cleared). When you buy the item, all that happens is that an authorization is obtained. Some banks will show you this authorization, and I personally find it very handy to see. I believe that First USA was one of the few who did, but now that they're merged into Banc One I am not sure if they still do. I know that Citibank and AMEX do not.

Great thread. Thought I'd give it a bump.

Looks like a lot of you are college students and prefer the cash back incentives of most of these cards. Cash is good, but I opted more for the miles/points programs. I personally use the Marriott Rewards Platinum Visa since I tend to prefer Marriott brand hotels when I'm traveling. It's also compatible with most of the major frequent flyer programs and gives you a nice little 5000 point kick start with rewards like hotel stays kicking in starting at 7500 points and at various intervals on up. It does carry an annual fee of $30. It's Visa so you know it's accepted anywhere they take plastic (plus I have an AmEx Corporate I can always use in a pinch.) I have no idea what the rate is since we never carry a balance. Like most other points/miles programs the points never expire. We plan on just letting it build for a few years and then taking a vacation with some of the built up rewards.

However, our biggest problem is that we don't use it enough so the buildup has been slow to date. We're savers by nature and like to know EXACTLY where we stand each month. So we tend to favor paying for most things with our debit cards. The only things we primarily use the credit card for is gas, online purchases, and any major purchases (anything over $200.) Most months our bill is only between $500-$600 or so. We could shift our day-to-day expenses from debit to credit and rack up the points quicker. But that's how most people start to lose control and even though we manage our money well we don't want to start bad habits just to get some extra incentives. I know, I know, we're overcautious fuddy duddies. But we're also young and financially secure and we don't ever want to do anything which might cause us to lose that edge.

One thing I was just thinking of which is probably screamingly obvious to some . . . is there anything to prevent you from paying for your house payment each month with your credit card? Since we HAVE to pay our house payment each month, have a large credit line, and always pay the balance on our card anyway it would be a great way to build points VERY quickly as far as I can tell. Anybody else doing this?

As a hard-core overclocker and general tweaker, I REALLY like my Capitalone.com Visa. Capital One is one of the few credit card companies that still offers a Purchase Protection program. Basically if you break or burn up something you buy within 90-days, they'll replace it for you up to $1o00. This is very handy for those pesky AMD CPUs that have a tendancy to crack when installing the heatsink. I've used the program twice now with good results. Just make sure you dot all the i's on the claim form.

I've got scans of the the check and the cover letter from my latest claim up on my website.

They have tons of other benefits, but the Purchase Protection is fairly unique.

No doubt that the Blue is a great card, but you have to have nearly a perfect credit history to get one. Cap 1 can approve almost anyone with some kind of card. The other big advantage is that Visa is almost universally accepted.

This might be slightly off-topic as this is a credit card linky. I saw the Bank of America Platinum checking card which comes with their Advantage Checking(Minimum combined balance of 5000$) has the price protection guarantee. They don't have any more details on their site. It will be nice if someone can find out more details about this.

I think the Blue card is not as hard to get as it used to be.
When the blue card first came out, very few people were able to get it. It's not the case now.

the blue card is almost 2 years old, and it's quite a success for amex.
