Ever had your CC company call you with suspected fraud, like someone trying to swipe $2000 from your account?

Well, this just happened to me recently. I was told to stop using my card as they were canceling it and were going to send me new ones with a new acct. number.

Now today I get a letter in the mail telling me to cut the card up through the magnetic strip and send it back to them.

Anyone else ever get into a fraud situation like that and been asked to return by mail the cut up card to the bank? Why would they want this?

To make sure the card is no longer out there. Just take the cut up card to your local branch if you don't want to mail it.

Well, fraud dept. guy on the phone told me to destroy them and didn't mention turning them in. So I was wondering if turning them in was standard protocol.

I have never, ever had a CC company ask for the card back. I would call the number on the back of the card and ask them if this is real.

Because fortunately the person you reported your LOST card to realized that was impossible.

Hmmm... I think I will. It looked official enough, and when could anyone do with my cut up card anyway?

Yeah, but there are still a few places that take CC with a paper swiped image + signature.

Edit - ooh cut it up AND send it back. I'd call - sounds a little fishy.

You could still use the card online if it were cut up and you had all the pieces...

They just called and told you they were sending you a new one, didn't even ask you about the charges in question or anything? That sounds weird.

Oh no, they asked me if I had bought anything from Company X yesterday for $2000+ , and I hadn't. They then said they were canceling that account and sending new cards.

Someone stole/used my CC info 2 weeks ago. I was holding my CC when the company called me to alert me of the fraud. I didn't have to mail it back, though.

According to the guy that called you?

Or you called them?

The guy who I spoke to said they were canceling it because it had been used fraudulently.
They had left 2 voicemails for me during the day urging me to call them, and I returned the call.

Let me try:

Hey mosh!! Did you buy dinner at McDonalds for $13.67 last night?

No? Geez, sounds like fraud. I'm cancelling your card - now send it to me!

Sounds fishy.

Does the number match the one on the back of your card?

Could be legit, but seems a little off.

Did that charge actually show up on your account, if you can check it online? If it did then I would feel comfortable sending the card back, otherwise I would call them again just to be sure.

Yeh, I'm just wondering about the "send the card" back deal. I think I'll call the bank and ask since no one else seems to have had to do that.

No, it didn't show up on my account online. I looked. They said there would be no charge to me for the fraudulent charges. They had taken care of it.

I dunno...sounds a bit weird. It's probably fine, but I would call the number on the back of your card just to be safe. Can't be too careful.

They actually read off the account number in the voicemail and then gave me a number to call them back.
Account number? Or card number?

Either way that's not impossible information to aquire.

Easiest way is to call your bank directly.
