Card #
I guess I was using account # and card # as one in the same.

I can tell you my experience with this. I used my card at a machine that was 'compromised' (as in, it *may* have been copied, but hadn't been used). The bank called me, told me my card was cancelled, and said 'look at the back of your card, and call the phone number there'. That was all.

My bank - don't know about others - DOES NOT initiate a call in which they ask for personal information, and DOES NOT leave a call-back number.

Happened to me last year... I think I made a thread or two about it.

I found out when I went to go purchase some concert tickets and my card came back declined. Called up my bank (Wachovia) and was told that my card had been flagged for suspicious activity (why they didn't call me I don't know). Cut up my card, had a new one in the mail within 3 days along with an affidavit saying that I didn't try to make the purchases.

Luckily they didn't have my PIN (and thus couldn't put anything through as debit). I was also fortunately poor at the time, so even if they had my PIN there wouldn't have been enough money in account to make any of the purchases anyhow.

I also had some issues with a shady-ass phone services company and someone trying to hack my PayPal. Not fun.

When this happened to me, my bank just called and asked me to confirm some charges that were made, which I could see online and were in fact made by me.

The voice told you to cut up the card? Are you sure it wasn't your husband?

They sent a letter telling me to cut up the card down the magnetic strip and mail it back to them.

I'm pretty sure it's a legit. I was just wondering if anyone else had this situation happen and were asked to return the card.

I wasn't asked to return my card. They cancelled it so even if someone got ahold of the thing again, they wouldn't have been able to do anything with it.

You could have called that number several times over the period this thread has been running.

Thanks Mom.

I will call tomorrow. I haven't mailed the cards back to them. Just got the request today.

My reason, once again, for starting this thread is to find out if anyone else was asked to mail canceled cards back.

The credit card is typically cut from top to bottom to separate the numbers and break the full length of the magnetic strip. Having been told to cut the card down the magnetic strip seems to me to be similar to cutting a UPC symbol from left to right. The numbers remain available in their original order and the zebra lines can still be scanned. This is the point where I become suspicious.

I have had a card canceled due to expected fraud since a history of credit card numbers had been stolen from someplace that had my card in its history. I was told merely to dispose of the card. It was not necessary to send the card back to them.

I recommend calling the number on the back of the card to discuss this issue with an account manager.

I have had the bank send a letter telling me to cut up my card because it was in a sequence of card numbers that had been compromised. They did not ask for the cut up card, though.

I've canceled cards in the past and have been asked to return the card. In every instance I had already cut it up and disposed of it. I told them that and they were fine with it.

Nowadays, I run the expired ones through the shredder for good measure.

No, and I've had 4 different accounts compromised.

You aught to be making that call. If these folks have your CC number they might have had a busy night.

changing the number, for example of an Amex card, does NOT prevent the old number from being used.

i went through that with Amex and an over-aggressive domain registrar a few months back. cancelled the card because of that registrar, then someone else that had the number used the card.

Amex said i could dispute any charges i wanted, but that i couldn't stop charges from being put through with the old number.

much to my surprise.

I just had my AMEX card compromised yesterday. Some bastard bought a $2k plane ticket to Paris online. This is with a card that I almost never use (except when at Costco).
The guy on the phone said some people just keep trying random numbers until they get one that works.

Didn't mention to mail the card back though.

Yeah, my Citi MC was compromised somehow last March. Someone was buying random diet stuff (only ended up amounting to ~$250) on my card. Citibank never asked me to send back the card, just destroy the old card and I'd get a new one with a new number. I also got a fraud form to fill out and just had to attach a copy of my statement with the circled, fraudulent charges.

I've had at least 4 different accounts and cards compromised from every major bank in this country and NEVER had them ask for the card back. I definitely wouldn't do it without calling them specifically to verify. Do not use the number they called you on, get the number from your bank's website. Personally I wouldn't ever do it even if they asked me to. There's no good reason for it whatsoever.

That said, make sure they actually cancel the account number. I've had it happen to me TWICE that they say the account is cancelled but in reality they just added a new account number to my existing one and left the old one there. Lots of fucking idiots out there, gotta watch your back.

PM me if you have questions, I'm kind of an expert at this bullshit after having been through it so many times.

You could have called that number several times over the period this thread has been running.
But then this thread wouldn't grow to be 5 pages of answering the same thing over and over... You don't get it do you?

Anyways, I've never heard of anyone being asked for cards to be sent back, and have several accounts compromised, and never had to send any cards back. Usually, the agent would call me directly and asks questions about the suspicious purchases to see if I could have make the purchases myself. If it's deemed that I didn't, the charges would be cleared and an investigation into the fraud ensues, and I would receive a new card in the mail.

If it's a corporate account, I keep the same card and the charges would be on file (and I would not be responsible for them) until the investigation closes.

I ALWAYS call the numbers on the back of the cards.

So there, we can now lock the thread.
