I don't keep track. I have accumulated about $400,000 in credit debt where I would care less in paying off.

How do you go about doing this and is there any negative impact?
Contact the 3 agencies (online) you will get a code. You will have to unlock your report before anyone can pull it. The unlock lasts for a short period and then re-locks. Could be a pita if you apply often. Other than that, good idea.

Nope, your FICO score is not free, just the credit report. If you're denied credit anywhere though, you can typically request the information used to make the decision, which I would imagine would always contain your FICO.

That only gives the report from the credit company they based the decision on, not a score.

The only credit score that matters is your FICO score. All the other scores that are bantered around to get you to buy them aren't worth the bandwidth used to send them to you. If it's not a FICO your wasting your money.

There are other scores that matter but they aren't available to the consumer.

I do the free thing every other year or so. Note that they don't give you actual scores, just report of what the three companies have on you. You can get scores but you'll still have to pay for it.

My bank however provides me with a free service of keeping track of my FICO scores. I'm not sure if it's truly *the* FICO scores but it's good enough for me.

I use creditmonitoring.citi.com. Provides all 3 credit agency reports and scores. Also notifies me if my credit was updated with a negative report.
Been using it for a while now. Saved my behind when BofA tacked on a $1.17 foreign transaction fee for a purchase I made when I was in Mexico. I had paid the balance off 3 days after the purchase but the fucking bank added the fee like 15 days later and I never got a notification (I don't get paper statements).
When the negative hit my report, I was notified by creditmonitoring and I immediately called and had it reversed at BofA.
Credit monitoring has also helped improve my credit as I am vigilant about what I charge and how quick I pay it off. Experian 802. Equifax and Transunion 786.

Specialized scores like your auto enhanced score, insurance companies have one, even the utility companies have come up with one. Most lending institutions have their own score. Your FICO a lot of times is just a number in a formula.

I use the Credit Score Tracker from Discover. It's similar to other services and cheap enough, although only tracks Experian but comes with a free monthly report from them. I get my reports from all three every year. I use Credit Karma for my Transunion report (It's free!)

To all those that discredit the score/reports, it can cost you lots of money and heartache when you try for a loan without knowing that your score is low because of something that is incorrect or easily fixable.

It's fiscally important to know your score and what's on you report.

I use this too. Any time there is a new request for credit I get an email and something in the mail. Once a month if I feel like it I can get an update and check any information that might be derogatory. Once a year I get something in the mail for all 3 agencies so I can check all of my information from all 3.

I check my report through annualcreditreport occasionally to make sure everything is correct. I couldn't care less about the actual number, though.

QFT. FICO is the only one that matters. With few exceptions, myfico.com is the only place to get it. All other scores, as previously noted, are FAKO's. Google fake vs fico if you want more info, but theyre worthless. They can be anywhere from 3-4 points away from your FICO to 100 points or more.

That said, I pull my FICO's once a year, and my credit report 2-3 times/month through USAA. Unless Im trying to bump off inquiries from EQ or TU...then I use 4 pullers daily until gone
