Credit Union Best Place To Get A Mortgage?

I am looking to take advantage of the cheap housing in my area (Florida). I am looking for the best deal on a mortgage. Do credit unions typically offer a better mortgage than traditional banks?

Have you considered calling a few and actually talking to them to see what kind of rate you can get? Every area and every bank is different.

Knowledge is power, and just getting on phone asking people what is best rate they can offer is just asking to get ripped off because they would need quite a few bits of financial info to give you an honestly accurate quote, vs. just giving you a low ball rate that you would never really qualify for because some salespeople know that otherwise you will just hang up and call someone else.

Only rate, terms, and costs that will matter and be legally binding are those on closing documents (HUD-1 and mortgage note), not what anyone tells you verbally or even on good faith estimate (which is not legally binding anyways - just view it as a glorified sales pitch).

I've found that our CU has lower PMI rates than most other banks and we also get back a decent chunk of cash each year as "dividend" for having loans with the bank. It's not chump change...it's like $800.
