The band sold 30 MILLION on 3 albums, they must be a little better than ok. But, I'm probably wrong, because ATOT is the be all, end all of music truth.

I hated them b/c they were pretentious, derivative (re: What If) and overblown (re: With Arms Wide Open).

Also I hated that song Higher -- it had the most annoying little guitar bit ever, heh.

When the single first came out, I'd hear What If on the radio and alternately think it was Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots or Pearl Jam (depending on what part I was listening to).

What If was derivative because possibly they have influences (like almost any other band)? C'mon. The fact that it took pieces of several other bands is better than some bands that copy one other band.

With Arms Wide Open is overblown. If that's the case I've got a number of other songs you can throw in that class, including one from Green Day and Staind.

Influence == Black Sabbath to Soundgarden.
Derivative == Alice in Chains to Godsmack.

It's one thing to play music in a similar style, it's another to ape the vocal style itself.

Uh, and how many albums did the backstreet boys sell? At they better than ok too?

different market segment. Creed marketed to Generation Xers and to an extent Ys. Backstreet Boys marketed to teeny-bobby girls. Apples to oranges.

It's not really necessary to give specific reasons for disliking bands, as musical taste is objective (duh). People buy William Hung records too, but it doesn't mean he's got talent. Same with Britney Spears. Record sales != talent. In general, marketing = record sales these days. Producers and executives decide who they want to be successful, and they make it so.
Hence 30 million albums sold for Creed.

C'mon do you really believe that. Do you really believe advertising FORCES people to buy something. Hell, poster just above you said that those on the fence ended up hating them because they got played so much. Why would someone who hates the band buy their album? You bashers are contradicting yourselves as a group.

I dunno, most of the people I know who bought Creed albums were high school boys -- teeny-bopper boys, you could argue.

Not necessarily. But the "angry" sound worked really well for them. It would have been one thing if that was the only significant change, but with all the other changes it just sounded like the whole band had been neutered. (Or lobotomized) Instead of standing out against every other Christian rock band it was as though they were striving to be more like them.

sorry, I don't see it the same. Stapp kept his singing style throughout all 3 albums. Heavy songs were played with a heavy singing voice, ballads were played more mildly.

I haven't been a teeny bopper boy for 20 years. Neither were have most of the folks that I saw at their concert 3 years ago.

But his singing style was Eddie Vedder's first.

what i hated the most was the arrogance displayed by both that guitar player and scotty up there.

you have the guitar player assuming his 'im a rock god' pose every chance he got.

and then you have scotty up there who is pretty much the defintion of posturing, doing his Jesus on the cross pose every chance he can.

a member of creed talked crap on Pearl Jam ("Eddie Vedder wishes he could write like Scott Stapp."), if there is ONE band that creed shouldnt talk crap on, its them.
considering they owe their whole existance to Pearl Jam.

Could be or could be like many bands (see Disturbed) they experimented with different flavors of music.

Oh, I totally forgot about that. That's another thing that bugged me (although I already didn't like them).

Okay, finally a good supported argument. I can fully understand not like someone because of their arrogance, as long as it can be shown.

I still like their music, though.

Yeah, that was my first impression of the band, a Pearl Jam clone that had songs that weren't as good.
Then came the unbearable overplaying.
(Of course, Pearl Jam quit putting out good albums years ago themselves. A good song here and there, but no good albums.)

Regardless of the motivations the fact was it seemed as though they were becoming just another clone of some other band, in this case some generic Christian rock band. That turned people away from their music, and the radio's overplaying of the new songs is what led to people hating them so much.

My reasons for disliking them:

#1: Scott Stapp had one of the most overblown ego's in music ever. He thought he was god's gift to music, but missed the mark by a long shot.

#2: Songwriting. Most of their lyrics were complete drivel, and never went anywhere, except to repeat choruses.

#3: None of them were great musicians in any sense. Bland guitar and drums. I could go see a thousand bands that could play twice as well.

#4: I dislike ANYONE that has to play with The Doors. He thought he was Jim Morrison himself up there. Why anyone would want to emulate a drunken and drug taking loser who was one of the most overrated poets/singer/songwriters of all time is beyond me.

I would dispute that last part -- Yield and Riot Act were both good albums (I liked Binaural when it came out, but it hasn't held up that well).

But then, that's a totally different thread right there.

Always amused me how a generation of kids who claim to hate Nirvana rushed out in droves to buy records from a band that SOUNDED EXACTLY LIKE THEM.

Funny since though I am not a huge Nirvana fan I can appreciate the talen that Cobain had for songwriting. Creed on the other hand can't even write the songs to begin with.

Wait a minute!

Do they sound like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Doors, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains or bland Christian bands? Guys, please make up your mind.

Sounds like Nirvana? Haha! Boy, I don't think you know the first thing about music then.
