I have found those who make such noise are typically less desirable neighbors than those who do not make such noise. The lifestyles are often different. This enables apartment management to impose fines and possibly even evict the noisy tenants.

I think the neighbor has overheard the OP about ATOT too and is now posting in this thread. :hmm:

It is true that my new neighbor on the other side of my bedroom wall is noisy. They were playing music through the night while they slept. This was waking me up and disturbing my sleep patterns. So I decided to knock loudly on their door and wake them up whenever their music kept me awake. One visit at 11:30pm and another at 4:00am and they have stopped playing music through the night. I was courteous and did not yell or argue, even apologized for waking them. Although I was clearly angry at the 4am time.

There was another time when they started a movie at 11:00pm on their new large screen LCD television. The music/noise from that system was pounding through my whole 1-bedroom apartment. I walked over there and asked them to turn it down, nicely. Again no yelling or arguing.

There have been numerous other times when their noise woke me up and I considered my options, calling police or notifying apartment management. However, instead of doing either of those I just walked over there and asked them to turn it down. It seems to have worked because they have been quiet this last month.

Then again, they appear to have an uneducated lifestyle and they seem to be struggling to make it in this world. They may have realized they could receive more problems than the high volume is worth.

When on the phone you could play your tv or stereo loud and take the phone conversation into another room so that they can't hear you....that's a short term fix.

Long term is to get some sound proofing material and put it on the wall or do like RedSquirrel suggested.

You could also build or purchase a bookshelf for that wall and line it with a bunch of books.

Get earplugs.
I used to share an apartment with 3 fratboys in a 4br apartment. The TV was on overnight most nights at a pretty decent volume. Most nights there was socializing going on in the common area. I had some pretty good earplugs and it was never an issue for me.

Also for the guys recommending sound proofing, have you guys seen the prices on that stuff? It's expensive as f00k.

Search online for mp3s of folks praying the rosary. Download a bunch of them and set them to play every time you leave the house. After several hours of hearing the droning prayers the neighbors will move out.

Sweet, now... convince the man you are a spy for the Russians or possibly even aliens. Learn Klingon pronto! It might also be neat to trick him into falsely believing you are scanning him through the wall. Build a contraption that makes a deep, loud clicking noise at regular intervals (sorta like an MRI) and place it near the wall when he is home. Then, mumble statements about the "thought pattern" and "poor resolution" when you turn it off.

You can do more to insulate the walls than blankets, but it'll be costly. How about a white noise generator?

Just start talking about the murder you commited last week and the upcoming hit you're planning with the hell's angels.

Buy a gun that makes a lot cocking noises and start playing with it at all hours of the day and night.

At one point they might get scared enough and move out.

"Sparrow to base, sparrow to base, come in. Situation compromised. Civillians in adjacent apartment have overheard too much. Recommend cleaners be sent over immediately, repeat, RECOMMEND IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF SECURITY RISK IN ADJACENT APARTMENT" - Say this really loud.

Seriously though, you live in an apartment. Accept it or live in a real house.

I did not say who is right or wrong. The company that constructed the building without proper sound insulation between units is clearly the wrong party. However, nothing can be done about that unless the unit owner wishes to remove the walls to install insulation (or install the idea from above for the sound barrier). If someone does not wish for the neighbors to hear then it is important to make less noise. This can be done by turning down the television and radio while talking softer into the phone.

I am pretty sure the neighbors do not enjoy having the sound of the OP's phone conversations drift into their apartment. It ruins their own privacy also.

Sometimes it is good to think beyond oneself.
You've ignored a host of other possibilities in advancing your position without any real, first hand knowledge of the situation. Perhaps you should look beyond yourself as well.

Given that the aptartment was constructed to the code as it was at the time of construction, AND that it passed and was certified for human occupancy, it is not so clear that the construction company is the responsible party. Neither is the architect, since they may have been charged with other priorities than maximum/ optimum sound mitigation. They were designing apartments, not recording / radio studios. They are not congruent.
The Universal Building Code is designed for FIRE PREVENTION and Mitigation. Noise concerns are wayyyyyy down the list.

Making terroristic threats, even fake ones, is enough to get your door kicked in, ESPECIALLY if the nosey neighbors have any credibility at all.
AND, on the off chance a REAL Hell's Angel hears about you invoking their sanction without authorization, well, there's a ball peen hammer in your future is all I'm gonna say.

Not prudent.

This a good idea, espercially if you can screw the speaker to the wall in question. The mechanical connection will help to excite the whole wall, making it's diaphram like properties to be more "speaker" and less "microphonic". Getting one of those "beach / wave" background sound generators also serves to mask localized sounds.

OP: if you're locked in with a lease, or it's a Condo situation, I have a design for a floating wall of 1" T&G flooring on a 2x6 frame that attaches with L brackets and sheetrock anchors that can really reduce speech and common residential noise TRANSMISSION between adjacent units. Since the forms reside on the laptop that is not currently working, I'll have to describe it to you if you want. Inbox me if you want any other info.

White noise would work well too. Hook up a low voltage AC source directly to a sub for a soothing 60Hz sound. Or just hook up a huge industrial fan and make sure it's touching the wall.

You have a legal right to an expectation of privacy in your domicile. Everyone knows this. Except the flying piglet, and everyone else in this thread so far. And yeah I know, no one uses the term domicile anymore.
