Crimping tool necessary for terminating RJ45 cables?

Do I really need to spend $35 on a crimping tool in order to cut/connect my own cat cable sections, or is this something I can do with other tools, like an exacto knife and pliers?

Does a carpenter need a hammer or can he use the end of his pliers? You can use a knife, but it is against every rule in the TIA\EIA book and would not reccomend it at all. For $35 you should be able to get a good pair of Ideal crimpers. I have seen cheapos at radio shack for about $11.00 that would be good enough for a couple here and there.

Spend the cash and buy a set from Home depot with the ends and the ratcheting action on it. It is much more efficent applies alot more pressure on the end. For less that $50 it's something you buy once and use forever.

Thanks - Yes, I'm into tools, but this is for work and sometimes getting purchases okay'd is very hard. If it were up to me I'd probably get the best crimping tool I could find, but I have to take this proposal to my boss and have him sign off on it.

Guess I'll tell him we just have to have it!

well I have to say that I made my own cat 5 cables with a pair of pliers and a pocket knife. Just have to be smarter than the connector

I love my ideal crimper and ideal solid connector ends I purchase at home depot. Can't beat making your own cables for about a buck to the exact length you need.

how hard is it to make crimp on your own rj-45 ends?...also one other dumb question, when one says &quot;terminating&quot;, is that another term for crimping a jack on the end?

you don't have to have it. since each pin of the plug is like .5 mm wide, you can just use something very thin ;-) and hammer the sucker into place. repeat 7 more times per plug. don't forget you have to do it 8x for every plug you need.

buy the crimper on your credit card and expense it. If your boss doesn't realize that this is an absolutely necessary piece of equipment (second the hammer anology) then maybe you should have his job?
