critical hard drive failure

I have a friend at work that has a hard drive that has failed. I walked into his office as he was taking the head out..... I have no idea why he would do such a thing. anyway, we were thinking that if we could find another identical drive we could take the platters out of that one and put them in another drive to get the data. the drive was used for his wife's photo studio. we did talk about proper back up and how hard drives work.

If the drive is not bootable and the insides are messed up, the only thing you can do is send to a company that will charge minimum 1000 dollars to retrieve all data from broken drive.

We used to have HD recovery site and that is the app I used. If the drive is not spinning or phsyically damaged then you cant retrieve your data unless you send to hd saving company and it will cost 1k at least.

As for data recovery programs, there are a couple that I have used and worked. Recuva which is free and File Scavenger which costs $50.

I don't know what you could do yourself if you can't get it back together right. Have you tried putting it back together yet?

Taking the drive apart and exposing the platters makes it WORSE! If the data is that important, send it to a professional. If it was not yet taken apart, then there could have been some hope of DIY data recovery depending on the nature of the failure.

If you opened it up outside of a clean room, chances of you or any data recovery company getting any of the data off of it are virtually zero. If any microscopic piece of dust or fingerprints got on the platters its probably done for.

WD desktop drive has a head alignment that has to be managed; once it is opened it's pretty much FUBAR, especially outside of a clean room.

pay ~$3000 now, since it has been opened, or throw it in the trash.
