<< Add the logitech z560s, and take a $1200 tip for yourself. >>

Yup, take 1200 as a tip for consultation.

I thought the Seagate Barracudas had a problem with Raid 0 . . .

I'd spend most of the money on monitors. Maybe two of those 20 inch Dell flat panels. I wouldn't go for the MPX, because its not as good for gaming, which is probably what this box will be used for. 2 GB of RAM is idiotic unless you're running Oracle on it or something.

If I had 4000 bucks a a 16 year old that I had to spend, I'd spend 600 on a Duron based computer, and the other 3400 I'd split into the 34 parts and find 34 people to drink toilet water.

Definitely add a few items---

Liscensed OS--- I like winXP (gonna try Linux when I have the pc all to myself)
Logitech Z-560's--- perhaps there's better/more expensive out there, but these are already overkill. I guess you could get a couple of splitters from radio shack, and plug 2 sets of them in to your sound card for an 800W system. (again, overkill)
Good Keyboard/Mouse-- I like the Logitech cordless freedom optical for $79 at costco
good chair--- your buddy will have to select this himself. A chair is very personal. I prefer a nice, high-back reclining model with good lumbar support and fabric that breathes.
Other input devices-- good webcam, joystick, gamepad, steering wheel with pedals.
Games. Lots of them. Absolutely do not miss Operation Flashpoint

ONE MORE THING
Get 1 more of everything and some networking goodies. Lan gaming is good!

If I built a comp for 4k, I'd definately go all SCSI for the disk system.

A good SCSI card, a couple of X15 LP's, and dually CPU's.

He'll notice the benefits of those disks WAY more than he'll ever notice the 2 gigs of RAM.

Dude, where is the SCSI? Can we say SCSI RAID w/ 15K RPM drives?

Also, you need dual processors on there.

If you don't/won't get the SCSI drives, at least go IDE RAID. RAID owns... trust me.

Hey, if you want a Sony DVD rom I can take a dump in a box and send that to you for half price. j/k

I hate Sony DVD roms, noisy as heck, take forever to read cd-rs, and have trouble with double sided dvd's.

I was also thinking he should go dual processor if he's spending that kinda money! also dont waste the money on pc speakers, he should just buy himself a homestereo and run his PC to that! Also drop the sounblaster and buy a GTXP so many more options! Also think about keeping the extra loot for yourself because with that VIA and Nvidia combination you'll be doing some serious tech support!

Yeah, talk about overkill. Unless he's programming the next Quake engine or something, he doesn't need that much RAM. I'd ditch one of the hard drives too, but I guess he wants RAID. Everything else look alright. But than RAM and hard drives seem like overkill IMO. I'd spend about half of that (or less) and have cash for upgrades later. What's kinda amusing is that his PC and mine, while his is over $2000 more valuble.. both run modern games fast and smooth.

Your friend is obviously not into computers that much and is probably one of those peeps that have way too much money for their own good. In that case I'll build him a reasonably fast computer and use the rest of his money and upgrade my rig to something better.

<< You should steal some of his money since he's such a meat head >>

With the bucks you are going to save him, he should get the Sony GDM-FW900 24" monitor instead of the 22" samsung. The monitor these days is more important then the system. Any halfway descent system you build today is more then fast enough to run all games at 1600x1200, so why not get the best monitor, since it is what you are actually looking at!

I agree with most everyone here, why spend so much on a comp now that will be outdated in a couple of months?

I recently built myself a new comp about a month ago, but decided not to go all out (even though I could have):
{Check Rig} everything but the sound card/speakers was new

I tried talking him into dualing XP, building multiple computers, or cutting down on RAM and HD but he just
looked at me and smiled saying, "I want it though."
Grrr....

The sad thing is that he knows enough about computers to catch me if I tried to rip him off. Not that I would...
I've built 5 computers, four for other people and I believe my net profit is somewhere in the negatives. I just
hate seeing companies like Dell and Alienware make so much money off of their stuff and rip people off.

I completely agree with you guys. Everything is overkill. I just can't believe that at the young age of 16 I'm
actually going to build such an overkill computer. I never dreamed that I would ever be able to even touch
2 gigs of RAM or 240 gigs of HD. Eesh.

I would personally build multiple computers and get other stuff like mp3 player, digital camera, pocket pc, etc.
with the money left over.

That much money, you really have to go for a dualie...
I heartily agree with the "Go for a dual 2000XP" crowd - Just make sure you get ECC registered DDR.

There is a very very practical use for 2GB of RAM.

A RAMDISK system.

Those things are fast as hell!!!!!!!

It's sad to see a P3 700 with 2GB ramdisk loading stuff faster than an AthlonXP2000+/512MB of RAM. Sheesh.

C'mom guys, wake up and smell the coffee. :disgust:

I have a feeling that this is some 16 year old's idea of having fun (read practical joke, let's pull the computer geeks mouse cord and see how long a thread we can get), let the thread die people.

Let's face it, where is a 16 year old gonna get 4K to spend on a Rig?

When I was 17 and I had a job, I had somewhere around $2500. I can imagine $4000 is definately possible if you save long enough and work enough hours.

I didn't imply that a sixteen year old could't earn that kind of money given the time and effort. What I said was where is a 16 year old gonna get 4K to spend on a Rig? The operative phrase being "4K to spend on a Rig". If I worked that long and hard for 4000 dollars, I don't think I would put it all down on a system, computers don't impress girls, CARS impress girls.
