CASE: HAF X

CPU: i7 2600k (if you're building a crazily high-end build today you'd be insane to not go with SB or an extreme edition CPU.)

Motherboard: MSI-P67A GD5

You can get a Blu Ray/DVD Combo Drive rather than 2 seperate drives btw.

Anywho, changing the CASE/CPU/MOTHERBOARD are the only significant recommendations I can give you.

I'm sure M. Night Shyamalan will come in here and show you some very slightly cheaper alternatives for the stuff you listed..

Thanks. I guess you're right about SB. I'm not quite sure wtf I was thinking. Was the SB "bug" resolved? Either way, I think it was isolated to only the 3Gbs SATA ports, anyway, so I suppose it wouldn't matter.

I'll switch to SB/2600k/Appropriate RAM.

Yeah the bug was just recently resolved and motherboards are now on their way to retailers.

The motherboard I linked you has the fix and so do all the LGA 1155 mobos that are designated "B3"..

Let me clarify:

I would appreciate constructive criticism and input. Your post was neither.
He has a habit of thinking that he owns the General Hardware section and that his opinion is fact.

He does give good advice however.

im just busy in another thread. i could outperform that with 1/2 the cost.
No way you can outperform that build with half the price.

If you can somehow manage to do that than I'd leave this forum for good.

Why 570s in SLI, and not 580s, if you're buying a kW and on the low side of your budget? You could probably get away with 750-850W otherwise, I would think.

Why the 250Gb SSD -- installing games here?

I think that Noctua supplies TIM with the cooler. You could save ten bucks there.

Yeah, thats the big question. I suppose I could leave it up to him if he wants to ramp it up to dual 580's. How would the dual 570's stack up against a single 580?

I figure with such a high budget, and the ever increasing size of games, the 250gb would be worth it.

Let me know what you guys think of this build. I put it together for someone quickly.

He wants a high end gaming machine and is willing to spend 3-5k. Just seems like a waste to spend more than this.

Opinions?

It's a waste to spend that amount to be honest.

Here's a better build:
i5 2500K + Hyper 212+ combo $251 - you didn't mention overclocking, and even so the D14 is not really necessary unless you're into suicide runs
MSI P67A-GD65 $180 - would not be my first choice, but it is in stock
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $80 - plenty for gaming
2x 6950 2GB = $520 AR - not the cheapest 6950, but the rebate does allow for multiple claims, potential unlock to 6970
Mushkin Callisto 120GB $220 - faster than the Intel where it counts and not ludicrously expensive, there is a 240GB if you desire
Samsung F3 1TB $65 - the 2TB 7200RPM drives still kind of suck, double up on these if you need the capacity
Blu-ray combo drive $68 - might as well just have one drive to bother with
XFX 750W $100 AR - good quality and plenty of power
Antec P183 $140 - it's like the P193, just without the silly side fan that is begging to be broken
Total: $1624 AR

Final words: 1/2 the cost and will perform the same (or slightly better after unlock) as your original build.

2x 6950 > 2x 570 ? LOL

1TB > 2TB ?

120 GB > 240 GB ?

8 GB > 12 GB ?

BTW, the CPU upgrade doesn't count as I already called him out on that.

Looks like I'm here to stay guys!

More HDD/SSD space doesnt NOT give you better performance the extra 4GB RAM would NOT give you better performance in any game. yes 2x 6950 just about = 2x 570 when unlocked to 6970's can even beat the 570's. And the CPU upgrade does count, besides no one expected you to keep your word anyway.

I really would've left if you somehow managed to keep the same HDD/SSD space and RAM; of course you can cheap out on both of those things and drastically lower the price.

BTW, can you give me a link to where a 6950 unlocked to a 6970 SLI beats a 570 SLI?
