Flipflops aren't suitable footwear. If You can't run in your chosen footwear, they aren't appropriate for the task.
Flipflops are possibly the most useless thing ever invented. It is functionally preferably to just not wear shoes.
'But,' you say, 'I want my feet to not have to touch the ground.'
'But I can't be bothered to put shoes on.'
Well, congratulations, you're one useless fuck. Do you also leave your house wearing a jock strap and nipple pasties, because you desire to not be naked, but can't be bothered to put clothes on?
Yes. I enjoy walking it >100 degree weather in enclosed shoes or barefoot on the burning hot ground. A river? Let me walk through the rocks and water in my tennis shoes and socks so I can protect my feet and enjoy soaking them for the next two hours.
Completely useless.
Flipflops aren't suitable river shoes. For that you want decent sport sandals like Tevas, or if you're serious about walking in rivers; boots.
When it's 100° out, your feet are gonna be 100°. It doesn't matter if you're wearing boots, sandals, or flipflops. If you were serious about hot weather comfort, you'd wear wool socks, and decent shoes. That way you'll have good protection from blisters.
Heat isn't cumulative. You're body is putting out 99° The outside temperature is 100°. Guess what temperature your feet are. No hurry. I'll wait while you look it up...If it's 100 degrees out, flip flops make it feel like 100 or less depending in the breeze. Wool socks and shoes? Piss off. Now my feet are 130. Blisters? Glad I have a decent fitting pair of flip flops.

Who says you can't run in flipflops? I bet I could outrun you in a pair, distance and speed.
I doubt it, and I'm not even a runner.
I know it. You show your ignorance once again.
There are long distance runners that run in these - http://www.lunasandals.com/
There's even a book about runners that can run 50-100 miles in a pair of sandals.
Hey, you learned something today.
While those are still shit footwear, they aren't flipflops. Get your eyes checked.
Edit:
Btw, what do mean by "my ignorance once again"? If you're gonna cop a superiority complex, make sure you have the chops to back it up. Otherwise, you just come off as a stupid fuck.

And I can run in flipflops. Maybe, I'll run the Falmouth Road Race tomorrow in a pair, just for you. I'd love to know why you couldn't run in a pair. Maybe, you can't but other cans. The Luna sandals are essentially flipflops but with an extra string that goes around the back of the heel. Again, you learned something today.
