I need to transfer quite a few files. If I use cross over cable, it will be direct move from laptop to desktop. If i use USB, then I would have to trasnfer to external then to my desktop. But! Lets ignore those 2 facts and think speed wise. Which is faster?

Crossover will be the way to go. A crossover cable can be found at most big box retailers that sell networking equipment and electronics stores. You might also find one at Home Depot or Lowes hardware in their electrical section.

If you have new enough hardware, you can use a standard cable. Newer hardware is sometimes aware of direct connections and will automagically switch the send and receive lines directly on the port. I know Mac hardware can do this.

True, it's really handy. Almost any networking gear in the last three years will automatically correct so there's no need for seperate crossover cables any more.

To do USB you can not use a simple USB cable you have to buy a special cable that have a transfer module in the center.

Thought this cables are rated USB2 they usually s**x.

And that's theoretical speed, GbE actually comes closer to its theoretical max than USB does in practice, so the actual disparity may be even higher. I should point out that for file transfers, disk speed is going to limit you before network throughput until you start getting into RAID0 or 5/6 arrays.
