Cross-Platform secure IM Project with wxWindows: Idea-Gathering Stage, looking specifically for linux input

A lot of IM services claim to be cross-platform, but most of the non-Windows clients are pretty bad, and they definitely are not consistent with the Windows version in terms of having the same features and interface. We now plan to change all that.

Beginning soon, BitWise Chat (which has been out for about a year now) will be ported to the cross-platform wxWindows library, which will allow for natively compiled linux, Mac OS and Windows versions to be generated from the same source code (different wx libraries, of course). All while still retaining the same functionality from the current client (offline messaging, detached mode, encryption, etc).

In order to facilitate making the best service available, we have created the BitWise Chat forums as a medium for close communication between users and the developers, as well as a place for users to kick around ideas. Further, the forum has a focus on security, because IM and security go closely together, especially in a business setting.

We are particularly seeking those of you who can provide insights regarding linux and how UI and other expectations are different among the linux community from the Windows community. While we are not looking for coders, we are looking for people who would be willing to help test a linux version, as well as offer advice in terms of how to package the program, or how linux' needs are different from Windows'. We are also looking to address security concerns, both with linux and other platforms. Further, the linux crowd is more demanding and functionality driven than the Windows crowd, and it is essential to us that we can successfully cater to both markets.

It may sound overly ambititous, and maybe it is. But we have to try. Thanks to all in advance for your consideration.

Well that's a start, I guess.

Any ideas for other hangouts that would also be receptive?

You can check out some of the linux forums. I know Mandrake has one on their site, gentoo also. There is freebsdforums.org (which mainly deals with the BSDs)...
