ATI + XFIRE = waste of money that could/should have gone into something else imho...

After reading the reviews today, I'm inclined to agree. The 1600x1200@60Hz has to be the worst bungle-up in GPU history. The Voodoo 4/5, Rage Fury MAXX, etc. just had slower GPU cores, but this seems to be an engineering mistake, which IMO makes the hardware completely worthless.

Let's think about the situation if you already own a X800XL or X850 series. Hmm...I could go out and buy a new motherboard (~$100) and a Crossfire master card (minimum $200), and possibly a beefier power supply. Or...I could sell my old card and buy a sinlge 7800 GTX ($450 max) and not have to put up with outdated hardware or the 1600x1200@60Hz limitation. Alternatively, I could just buy a X1800 etc. in less than a week and most likely get the same performance as Crossfire.

ATI deserves all the bad press they're getting right now. This is coming from a guy who hasn't given any money to nVidia since the TI4600, but has owned a 9800, 9800XT, X800 XT PE, and X850XT (damn the PCI-E transition). The 7800 GTX I have now is just clearly the best that's available. It bests the Crossfire solution in terms of compatibility, resolution, and in many cases speed as well. Hopefully ATI will get their act together and implement Crossfire more successfully on the next gen cores that are right around the corner.

In any case, I personally won't use Crossfire until the bugs are worked out of the Southbridge on ATI's motherboards, or Intel gets the 975X to market and is proven stable. The sad thing is that if Intel gets the 975X to market first and it's rock solid stable; enthusiasts are likely to just snatch up another 7800 GTX later on down the road since they'll already own a 7800 GTX by that time, due to ATI screwing the pooch this time around.
